NEW YORK — The intense rivalry between Facebook and Google just got juicier.

In a twist seemingly out of a Hollywood thriller, Facebook hired a prominent public relations firm to try to plant stories harshly criticizing Google's privacy practices in leading news outlets. The efforts backfired when the firm approached a blogger who not only declined the assignment, but also went public with the offer.

The latest Silicon Valley drama has also evoked chatter of smear campaigns, secrecy and even Richard Nixon. It took the once-secret blogger known as Fake Steve Jobs to help sort it all out.

One lesson: If you're going to write an incriminating email, don't. Pick up the phone instead.

Story here.

Facebook has a Watergate now.:P:lol:

What are they rivaling about? Search engine vs. social network doesn't make sense.

It looks like FB is trying to say they are better at privacy than Google, but it backfired.

I for one cannot wait for Google to go down in flames. Like 99% of their revenue is search, just think if suddenly one of their competitors actually got competitive :P

Google is more than a search engine, but to use it in an example, you don't want companies spamming your Gmail inbox based off your recent search list.

Maybe Google can hire a certain group of young basement dwellers to launch DDos attacks on Facebook ?
Imagine Facebook going down for about a month, those Facebook addicts would rage like there's no tomorrow

Seems kinda idiotic considering everybody knows google collects any info they can get their hands on. They just don't use it in any personal form, it's just demographics and statistics. Google knows you visit GS but all they're going to do with that info is show you game related ads, they don't go and tell the world that you like games.

Google doesn't make their money from search. They make their money from ad revenue. Of course the intelligence behind the ads is the info they've gained from searches.
