[QUOTE="lo_Pine"]South Park is preachy trash. Lol @ FG clip in the OP.B*llsh*t and you know it. It's amazing how dumb Family guy has become, though it does usually have 1 good episode after 5 or more terrible episodes.South Park really got to your guys heads...
MrPraline
I can't wait for family guy to make jokes about how Saint John looks so feminine in that periods art and that the Moses statue has horns.
Seriously?
Because there is so much hate here and it seems that I can't possibly turn anyone around from the hate of Family Guy, I'll just admit that I agree. I just thought this particular scene was really funny. But I didn't know OT hated Family Guy so much. lol. I'm a huge fan of South Park and literally have watched every episode at least twice, but I don't let Trey Parker and Matt Stone's opinion (strategic opinion) get in my way of finding joy in something. But I have the upmost respect for those guys and what they say. I agree with almost everything they say. Family Guy is more pop culture orientented and less intellectual. Just sort of not thought provoking and stupid-funny. The Simpsons never made me laugh persay. I just was entertained watching it.Family Guy is in danger of becoming as unwatchable as Simpsons is now.

I'm offended at how bad Family guy is at attacking Christianity and religion in general. Never have I seen a show that was worse in its attempts to deligitimize faith than family guy. Strawmen, lack of historical knowledge, its just garbage. Not making a clever statement or observation at all.

lol.. again, taking religious offense. Just calm down man. You should be more subjective about the way you perceive religion.Humor is not a debate.

Humour is pointing out things that appear to be silly in reality, not merely setting up a strawman and burning it. At least some of humour is and family guy isn't just humour. There are plenty of episodes where brian gets into speeches about religion and they are the type of arguments I expect from people on gamespot. BTw this goes for virtually every issue family guy talks about, not just religion.

Subjective... So I should ignore the reality and believe in the strawman that family presents so as to find it funny? Huh.

I dont think you understand what I mean.Humor doesnt have to be factual, and therefore doesnt have to follow strict rules like the rules of debating, such as the one you mentioned.
If I understand what you mean by strawmen in this context (indirectly criticising a feature of something that isnt there), this can include things like exageration (which is common in comedy), mockery (which always uses exageration on some level) etc
All of these on some level misrepresent the "butt of the joke", they make it an easy target. I am sure you dont find that only in Family Guy or the minority of comedy. For instance the pedophile in family guy has all the stereotypical characteristics of a pedophile. Are you gonna accuse them of stereotyping? Because while they are, this is what comedy often does. You cant just whine when it turns against what you believe in.

your Taking offence to their perspective on religious beliefs but believe it or not, many other people also perceive religions the way Family guy does other wise there would be controversy surrounding it. It's called freedom of speech and censorship would be apart of that. Mormons had an entire Broadway show based on there beliefs which pointed out the positives and satires the negatives. Don't forget the stereotypical jews or Muslim jokes. The fact is you really shouldn't get offended by what people believe and joke about because many people do it.There are plenty of episodes where brian gets into speeches about religion and they are the type of arguments I expect from people on gamespot.PhilokaliaWhat I always found ironic about Family Guy is how they constantly portray Brian as a hardcore atheist despite the fact that in more than one episode he has seen the Family Guy version of Jesus Christ in person (to include the episode where Jesus made Lois' breasts swell up as a display of his powers).

And I don't think you have grasped that family guy isn't merely humour. It tries to present what it considers as legitimate arguments against Christianity. It doesn't have the excuse of trying to be funny in those cases, it is subject to criticism and harsh criticism. Family guy is not mere comedy, we all know it is overwhelmingly liberal in what it presents, overwhelmingly anti religious in what it presents, over whelmingly serious at certain points.
You can find it funny for all thats worth but when I see a seirous argument attempted to be made, I will treat it seriously.

I don't care about things like that much, afterall he's just a character who really is just a result of the writer. and Brian's arguments most of time are luaghably bad as are some of the situations that the writers may put the family into. Although I didn't mind early family guy.

You'll have to give me an example (like... a video) where the criticism is serious. Like with no masking of humor in it. The specific instance I recall from my limited memory of family was one where Brian is talking to meg about Christianity and gives probably just about teh worst argument in favour of atheism. Its on that episode where of course they have to make the Christians at the end look like evil Sociopaths who bomb abortion clinics or kill a gay person or something like that I don't remember. But there is that underlying serious tone within family that does rear its head and I don't think that can be denied.

Unless I see the video I cant know.It could be that Brian in that scene is portrayed as an atheist that is an atheist for the wrong reasons.
Besides, Brian isnt exactly a smart person in the show. Portraying him as the atheist that will seriously convince others about atheism, would actually be a achieving the opposite.

I'm glad we agree Brian isn't smart, though I think given the attitude of Brian, that the writers intended for him to be a smart person. And I doubt they wanted to convince anyone, only but offer an argument against it. WHich I see quite prominently in family, at least the later seasons. I don't mind that episode where Peter meets the pope.
And I tried finding that video, but its not on youtube, only that clip where Brian won't give up the cross... Which I dislike. But will admit that is an example of them at least trying to be funny without anything to seirous or argumentative in it.

Brian is Seth Macfarlane's mouthpiece in the show (he also the only character that Seth uses his real voice for). Much like how Huey is Aaron Magrudder's in the Boondocks.[QUOTE="Philokalia"]
