I usually do them on the slower side, but not a super slow rate.  Fast push-ups really aren't the best because you're going to have to sacrifice some form to consistently stay at a high speed.  I think methodical, but not exactly slow is the best way to do push-ups.

I'd assume fast ones involve cardio as well as muscle building.

Adding on it's really more important to have explosive movement when you're finishing a push-up rather than the try to speed through a set as quickly as possible.  If you're able to do them fast without sacrificing any form, and still going just as low and coming up just as high then go for it.

Go slowly when bringing chest to the floor (negatives) and bring yourself up quickly (explode). Going quickly only works some parts of the Tricep Horseshoe and not the chest. Ackad

If you take your time and go at a regular pace which can be considered slowly you get much more out of it than if you go fast. Going fast just just means your muscles are not working as hard so as a result you get less success.

This @ shoulder width spread.

I have this little game I do whenever I'm watching TV and commercials come on. Get a deck of cards and draw a card: red suit pushups, black suit situps, then just do the number, and repeat. It's a healthier alternative that just channel surfing, and also makes the commercials go by quicker.

Back when I did them, I would go as fast as was comfortable.

Depend why you are doing them.

Faster ones, and clap pushups are good for explosiveness. As long as you aren't using momentum, it should still be a very good workout.

Slower will work the muscle longer, but your explosiveness might suffer.

Why not do a variety of pushups, there are plenty of kinds to do.

I suggest to go slow so you can focus on your form. Same thing with lifting weights, fast jerky movements is counter productive where going at a slower pace keeps your form in check.

to be honest form means pretty much nothing - look at Jay Cutler's form, it's horrible.

I prefer to keep a slower pace while doing push ups, I feel that they are more effective.

As slow as possible. Take like 3 minutes going up, and another 3 minutes going down. And there's your set. You only need the one. We are talking about cock pushups, right?

Seriously though, this.

That's a nice idea. I might steal that. Except I don't watch TV.

Your sig is awesome, by the way.

Do clappers, then do wide grip, then normal then close in the same set. Rest and repeat. When you get better do double claps. Keep it up till you can do behind the back clappers. When you get that do one arm clappers. When you get that put a beer on your back and try not to spill it.

I do slow pushups. I use to do fast pushups during PT tests where I have a specific minimum number to do in one minute. Not anymore though. I do pushups strictly for the heck of it. So, I do it nice and slow.
