So it's nearing that time of year when many people, myself amongst them, feel the superficial need to rank the best and worst experiences of the year. In the interest of finding any bands/albums i've overlooked this year, i'd like to hear about your favorite works of music this year. mine are:

1. For Emma, Forever Ago, by Bon Iver: A really beautiful acoustic album that ranks among my favorites ever.

2. Lightbulbs, by Fujiya & Miyagi: Pretty much the opposite of Bon Iver. Catchy beats and clever lyrics complement the fairly monotone vocals.

3. Midnight Organ Fight, by Frightened Rabbit: A powerful pop/rock album that still manages to impress me in new ways. It has 2 or 3 less-than-catchy songs, but they're over quickly and the rest of the album is just stunning.

4. Sound in Silence, by Glint: The mostly unheard of rock band Glint has taken a welcome departure from their straight-laced rock of the past, focusing more on synthesizers and drum beats that sound like bombs going off in your ears, but there's still plenty of guitar as well. The result is simply epic.

5. The Airborne Toxic Event, self-titled album: This album seems a bit more like straight-up rock than what I usually listen to, but it's catchy and fun, and songs like Sometime Around Midnight throw welcome curveballs.

6. '59 Sound, by The Gaslight Anthem: An awesome punk-rockish album. The lead singer has a great voice that brings the catchy melodies to life.

7. Elephant Shell, by Tokyo Police Club: A little more manufactured-sounding than their past efforts maybe, but this round of pop-rock is even more catchy.

8. Oracular Spectacular, by MGMT: The first half of this album enters your head and never leaves, while the second half is a bit more restrained. All around cool and catchy, though.

aaaaaaand i'll just stop here because i'm tired of doing this :P

Viva La Vida/Prospekt's March - Coldplay. The new songs that were just released are great...they should have just left them on the original release.

What Doesn't Kill Us - What Made Milwaukee Famous. Great relatively unknown band.

Blasphemy!

John Darnielle is easily one of the greatest lyricist of our time. Yeah the music is pretty average, but who listens to the Mountain Goats for anything but the lyrics?

Edit: I also forgot to mention This Will Destroy You's self-titled album in my first post, it's is pretty amazing.

I liked that album alot more than most of Coldplay's music, they were starting to become like Oasis, very generic and formulaic.

TV on the Radio i would recommend for lyrics...and the music too. "Patience is a virtue until its silence burns you" Pretty cool :P And "phonebooth" by primitive radio gods "am i alive or thoguhts that drift away?"...I guess ill answer the TC in this post.

Albums i have recently bought I really like.

TV on the Radio - Dear Science

Radiohead - In Rainbows

13&God- 13 & God

MGMT - Orracular Spectacular (good album but they suck live)

Beck - Modern Guilt (surprisingly good. His newer stuff i wasnt getting into...and then this came out)

Panda Bear - Dont remember the album name

Team Sleep - Team Sleep All good albums i highly recommend.

In OT, all good metal is underground. :P The White is awesome! One of the best acoustic album (well, EP :P ) ive ever heard. But I find the black metal tracks on From Which This Oak is just as sweet.

Of the albums that have been released this year my two personal favorites would be:

Crystal Castles Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles

Not only is it one my favorite albums released this year but I would go so far as to say that it is one of the best albums I've heard in years. If you like electronic music then you should be checking this out. Interestingly this summer they happened to tour with the artist responsible for my next choice . . . . .

Ghosts I-IV Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV

I've noticed that at least one person has put The Slip as one of their choices in this topic. Personally I thought Ghosts I-IV was much better. Drastically different from the more standard (but still excellent) album released later the same year the thirty six track instrumental release was experimental to say the least. There is something for everyone here, from soft piano to grinding guitar to distorted noise the sheer variety of sounds and s tyles are amazing. One of the best NIN releases ever is also my favorite album of 2008.

Only got 'Road To Revolution' by Linkin Park (and it's awesome), so that's my fave
