Is there such thing as pre-grunge or pre-anygenre? :P I always considered bands who were "pre-grunge" as alternative rock.Does pre-Grunge count? If so, my picks are Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.

When you say pre-something or proto-something, you generally refer to the bands that influenced the main artists of that genre. So they may not have all the characteristics, but they laid out the basics and have some similarities. For example, the Velvet Underground and The Stooges would be proto-punk, even if they didn't label themselves that way back when they started :) Of course. I've heard of both The Stooges and New York Dolls being labelled as proto-punk. Forgot about that, just never heard the term pre-grunge before.[QUOTE="xTheExploited"][QUOTE="viva_hate"]

I like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Temple of the Dog, but Soundgarden has to be my favorite grunge band....
I am not so into grunge, but these are my favorites from the genre.
1. Soundgarden
2. Alice in chains
3. 7 year b*tch
4. Temple of the dog
5. Screaming trees
6. Mad Season
7. Mudhoney
8. Mother love bone
9. Tad
10. Afghan Whigs
11. L7
12. Seven mary 3
13. Stone temple pilots
14. The Melvins
15. Pearl Jam
Overall though I think Brit Pop was a much better bands in the 90s like Blur, Belle and sebastian, Mansun, Pulp, and Supergrass.

I think people sometimes forget about Hole. Courtney Love may be a bit nuts now, but she used to be pretty good.

L7, riiiight. Completely forgot about the whole riot grrrl scene. Hole and Bikini Kill were great too!Film-Guy

Hard to choose seeing as it was such a tiny scene. There were only like 5 bands that were half decent. I'm going to say for my favorites, Mudhoney, Nirvana and Soundgarden.xTheExploitedThere were a lot of side projects which I love such as... Mad Season and then Temple of Dog. If you like any kind of grunge, these 2 are great somewhat unknowns!
Alice In Chains are by far the best Grunge band. Darth-Caedus
fUUNY AiC lead singer says they are metal with grunge and a hint of punk.
Idunno all of them I guess? Didnt realize there were enough to really call for a favorite...only like five of them lol
Anyway...
Alice in Chains
Pearl Jam
I hate Nirvana, though.
It is quite easy actually.how can you Hate NIRVANA?!?!?
I mean In Bloom,Smell Like Teen Spirit, And Lithium???

Hey man, Nirvana is good. Theyre popular for a reason.
I just dont like them. Exact same reason why I hate the Beatles. They got some good songs, nothing great imo, but some good ones.
As I said, I meant no criticism towards their talents or music or anything...its just not my cup of tea.
Yeah.. and there's just something about eddie's voice that is amazing... can't quite explain it :PPearl Jam is probably the only Grunge band I like, but of course I don't know all of them. So there are probably one or two Grunge bands I have never heard of that I would enjoy.

yea, until that damn Neil Young got his greasy paws on him. Then he just started to come off whiny!
I kid, I kid...I love both those guys, but when they put their minds together its just too much liberal for anyone's good lol

Yep same here, one of the first records I ever bought and I still listen to it to this very day.
Cold. At least for the first two albums. I guess I can't really consider them grunge anymore beyond that.
