Can't go wrong with most Metallica songs! I like a lot of the riffs in Avenged Sevenfold too! Can't really think of the song names though!

Feur Frei is awesome, it gives you a WWII feeling :o

Fellow Rammstein fan? I believe the opening of xXx contains a concert of Rammstein playing this song...

(I Used To Make Out With) Medusa by Bring Me The Horizon has some sweet riffs and so does 11th Hour by Lamb of God (I just picked those two out right away because I'm learning how to play them and thus I remember some of those riffs more easily :P).

I keep seeing people post Purple Haze... I never was a fan of Purple Haze :|.

I love the guitar riff in Life's Been Good. I know it's probably not the most "complex" riff out there, but I love it :D.

No More Tears(Ozzy). Zakk Wylde is great at making riffs.

Double Talkin Jive(Explicit "words" if you care) by Guns N Roses has a great riff to.

Crazy Train - Ozzy

Whispers in the Dark -Skillet (I don't care if I'm Atheist or not, Skillet is awesome)

Birthright - Celldweller (not a cool guitar riff, but the bass is awesome)

Do You Call My Name - Ra (give it a little bit, the guitar riff comes in eventually :P)

Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Given Up - Linkin Park (cool guitar riff and bass part)

Those are my favorites.

Good song with a good riff by a great band. I think the riff in the song Flaming Telepaths is even betterthough.

The opening riff of No World For Tomorrow by Coheed & Cambria (yes I know, many people despise them...) is really cool. Plus it's a lot more difficult then it sounds with all the palm muting.

The first song that came to mind was Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground.

Zeppelin's Trampled Under foot also has an amazing riff.

"Obvious classics"?

Anyway:

Sunshine of Your Love- Cream

Ramblin' Man- The Allman Brothers Band

I Want You (She's So Heavy)- The Beatles

White Rabbit- Jefferson Airplane

Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix

Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix

Voodoo Child- Jimi Hendrix

Brown Sugar- Rolling Stones

Layla- Derek and the Dominos

Uncle John's Band- Grateful Dead

China Cat Sunflower- Grateful Dead

La Grange- ZZ Top

Within You Without You- the Beatles (a sitar's close enough:P)

Darth_Tyrev

Yes, yes, yes yes and yes. All of those songs are classics, especially White Rabbit.

For me a very classic 90's riff would be

Smashing Pumpkins-Quiet

or Smashing Pumpkins- Slunk

The B section in "Under the Sun" by Black Sabbath on their album Vol. 4 is crushing...you know, where it picks up and the verses begin. I picture some huge metallic monster just rolling through the hills and destroying. It's a very heavy riff.

I like the riffs in "Drifting Sun" by Scorpions (guitarist Uli John Roth; album "Fly to the Rainbow" 1974). The vocals are meh (except for Klaus Meine's backing vocals) but the music is awesome.

EDIT: Anybody heard of that song?
