Since OT has undoubtedly the greatest knowledge of music anywhere on the internet, I figured I'd make a thread asking who are your favorite jazz drummers.

Art Blakey

Elvin Jones

Max Roach

Billy Cobham

Buddy Rich

Sigh, can't say I know any of those. The only one I know about is Futureman, but that's mostly because of his not paying bills because "he's from the future" and that he plays a drumitar. I'll check out those links and see if they are any good.

The video with Max Roach was great!

Danny Carey of Tool actually has a doctorate degree in jazz drumming, and I would have to say him.

Also Buddy Rich of course, and Thomas Lang even though he doesn't specialize in jazz.

Yes, but it's jazz-based drumming applied to progressive music...who cares what they get classified as.

He's still not a jazz drummer. He's a progressive/rock drummer that is sort of jazz influenced, but not a jazz drummer.

While I find Buddy Rich to be the most talented drummer ever, my favorite is Joe Morello, followed by Max Roach.

Billy Cob and Buddy Rich, obviously. And this guy I can't remember the last name of, Vinny...

And a couple metal drummers who play (some) very jazz-inspired sets: Sean Reinert and Etienne Gallo. Tomas Corn ain't bad either. And while Danny Carey is pretty good, I have to agree that he doesn't do a whole lot of actual jazz drumming in Tool.

Not big into Jazz (nothing against it, mind you), but that Buddy Rich vid is proof that he is in fact the greatest drummer ever. He does SO MUCH in that vid, it is ridiculous....

Some of my faves:

Art Blakey

Tony Williams

Philly Joe Jones

Shelley Manne

Elvin Jones

and Alan Dawson was awesome, especially with Booker Ervin and Jaki Byard.
