Here are some of my favorates: 1. The fith element- It looks awsome, its creative and crazy and yes very campy and its got Bruce Wilis in it! but i also think the story is pretty cool and its got some pretty good action, overall I love the world it creates. 2. Alien- Its a classic and of corse very iconic as well, in fact I dont think I need to explain why 3. Totall Recall- I like this one as well because its got good action and also a good story, and even though arnold swartzchenegar itsnt the best actor around I dont think he dose too badly, he's acctually kind of likeable in a way, and i mean this movie has everything: Mars, Mutants, people in altered states and a midget with a machine gun! 4. Terminator 2: again another Iconic classic, action is great, story is awsome and the liquid metal effects are mind-blowing considering the time, 5. Star trek (2009)- I had never seen star trek except "first contact" ageis ago which wasnt too bad, but this film was awsome! 6. Wall-e- not what you would first think of when you say sci fi but its still a great film in general, awsome visuals charachter design and of corse an environmental message. 7. Blade runner- I cant have a favorate sci fi list without mentioning this, I like to see it as an oposite to fith element, its dark, its not really action based, has some very interesting themes and ideas and i did it find very bizare at times but it was still awsome.

2001: a space odyssey
Because it has some realistic views on exploring space and it's a serious psychological thriller. It still looks great after 40 years.

Dark City
It's dark, weird and original

Cube
Same as dark city :)

Event Horizon
Probably one of the best Sci-fi horror movies

My favorite's probably Bladerunner because it's sci-fi fim noir, and it's story-driven, atomspheric, and cerebral (not just action and shooting). Also, Empire Strikes Back and the first Matrix are two more of my favorites.

Minority Report, Terminator 1 & 2, and the original Star Wars trilogy.

Edit: Plus The Matrix.

Stalker - Andrei Tarkovksy's second best work with beautiful shots, great characters, poetry and the film is open to everyone everything such a calm and beautiful film really. I can't explain how the good the movie is, you just have to watch it.

Children of Men-Because it has such a amazing story and concept, and the style the movie was filmed just great.

Escape from New York- Because of the cheesy off beat humor, the characters and the settings were great.

I know the lasttwo are animated movies (but it counts right?) but I have to mention Ghost in the Shell and GitS: Innocence.

The way they blend computer and cell animation jjust worked out so perfect to a sense. The the whole cyberpunk settings, plots and characters worked really well to. They weren't simple anime movies with some dull plots where they on a mission for revenge. It was so much more to it.

12 Monkeys is one of my favorite Sci-fi movies because I love movies that make you think like that one. Add that with Brad Pitts awesome performance, plus Bruce Willis, and you have a good movie. I also enjoyed Sunshine, I just like everything I've seen by Danny Boyle

star wars- no need to say anything

alien, aliens and alien 3- the xenomorph is awesome, sigourney weaver is awesome and acid blood tops it off

predator-arnold swarzeneggar, jungle, plasma weapons and an invisible alien that collects heads as trophys, what more can u ask for

starship troopers- although it is quite a B-grade movie it is still awesome, great weapons, hot chicks, michael ironside and some pretty decent special effects

Stalker: not fancy but it has very strong emotion and philosophical reference along with a superb camera work.

Dark city : strong story with a deep noir touch.

Solaris : The original Russian one is the best however with more philosophical approach to human nature and relation.

And the best is for the last : 2001 a space odyssey

To me a good sci fi isn't about explosions or machines killing things "though that is good sometime in the case of terminator".

I've said this many times but if you liked 12 monkeys check out La Jetee its a short film by Chris Maker which 12 Monkeys is based on, very haunting and I think its better than in 12 Monkeys....

Sadly I haven't seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. :( But of the sci-fi movies I've seen... Gattaca - thought provoking and inspirational. Sunshine - superb acting and visuals and was a really big surprise for me considering how little attention it got. Star Wars - don't really need to explain this one. :P V For Vendetta - thought provoking, great story, and Natalie Portman was great.

Lot's of my favorites being mentioned here. If I were to rattle five off the top of my head they would be as follows...

Total Recall (Arnold's best)

Fifth Element (As good as Star Wars)

Star Wars trilogy (Speaks for itself)

Dark City (Atmospheric, stylish, slightly meta-physical)

Alien franchise (Including 3 and Res, I love 'em all)

I thought GATTACA was a very good film. A lot of great visual imagery.
