Why are there so few and why are the ones you see rarely funny? .

The only one who is good is Ellen Degeneres. There have been no others that have made me laugh. And I really don't understand it.
To be honest, I don't really know any funny women. I mean, some are funny in a cute kind of way, but I don't know of any women who can crack funny jokes or tell a story in a purposly funny way, or have any sense of comedic timing.
The funny genes must be on the Y chromosome.
Edit: Oh, and I just thought of something... Ellen is a lesbian. So she only kind of counts as a femal comic :)

Women can't nearly be as funny as men. I've noticed that always but never understood that.
Curse my unfunny gender.
Stand up comics or comedy writers? There are tons of really good female comedy writers out there. :D

Actually, many female comedians are much funnier. :DRead any book by Sloane Crosley or Laurie Notaro. I hope to join these two one day. :D
Just a fraction of female comedians and comedy writers:
Lucille Ball andCarol Burnett areconsidered two of the funniest people ever, even though I have never personally watched much of their work yet. :o
Roseanne is hilarous. I used to watch old episodes when I was kid and she always made me laugh hysterically.
Kathleen Madigan
Tina fey
Ellen Degeneres
Sarah Silverman
Lisa Lampanelli
Margaret Cho
Heather McDonald
Natasha Leggro
Wanda Sykes
I don't think a few of them are that funny but other people do. I also don't think a lot of popular male comedians (like Dane Cook for example) are that funny either.

Most of those aren't funny at all. Lisa Lampanelli, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Roseanne, are all annoying and not very funny. I do like Betty White and Carol Burnett. But as far as stand-up comedians go, there aren't many who are funny. Ellen is the only stand-up comedian who can make me laugh hard.[QUOTE="Mega-Mustaine"]

First of all...Sarah Silverman is the worse comic on the planet. She is horrid. Absolutely bad I watched her stand up and couldn't laugh at all...at all. Second out of all of those on the list the only one is is funny is Wanda Sykes. Everybody else is unheard of or not funny...But Sarah Silverman funny?....no just no.Roseanne is the queen of comedy!

Well that is your opinion but considering how popular they are, i'd say you're in the minority.

Not really. I don't know many people at all who like Sarah Silverman or Roseanne. Being popular is not completely indicative of talent.[QUOTE="BMD004"]

 @ your sig. :D But I've noticed this too, but I don't really know why.I have had a lot of female friends who've been hilarious and have made me laugh, and my mom is really quite hilarious. People over the years, including male friends, have told me that I can be funny, so I do think that women can be funny. However, with that said, I really must say that there aren't too many female comedians whom I find too genuinely funny...at least not stand-up comedians. Some comedic actresses make me laugh though.

That's offensive.
Don't take everything so seriously.I've been modded for less...
Does it really matter if the comic character is male or female cause all i can get from this thread is tha females 'cant' do the job. If only alot of Females had the opportunity i say
Female comics fail miserably. It's just that simple. Maybe it's just my bias but i have yet to find a truly funny female comedian. All of the ones on last comic standing were terrible.
Pffrbt is one of the most sensitive people on this board. I made a gay joke one day in a thread, and he's ben constantly PMing me about how it offended him. While everyone else in the thread laughed, even the gay people. Not to mention that he said that he would kill someone in real life for making fun of him because he's gay He's probably one of the most sensitve people on Earth.-Big_Red-
S*** talking and lying about people behind their back really doesn't make you look good in this situation.
heh, i don't know if you guys will like my theory on why men are funnier but here goes.
like almost everything else it is biology.
being funny is pretty important for getting sex and being attractive. how many time do you hear a woman add, "and he makes me laugh" when they describe a potential partner?
women don't "need" it to get by so they simply don't have it.
it's natural selection that you can see in everyday life.

there is other things going on also like women tending to be better realists and more grounded and mature as individuals which does nothing for comedy.sociological things like not being encouraged to be funny or being looked down upon for being funny too. if a little boy sticks two pens in his nose and makes walrus sounds his parents laugh, if their little girl does it they would probably want to get her therapy.
it's actually pretty complex.
i also think other biological things may come into play.
being the childbearer tends to require sounder thinking skills that don't lend themselves to being funny.
men's visual thinking style would promote goofier concepts than womens verbal thinking style.
now that i think about it the female comedians i like the best are the goofiest ones. lucille ball and carol burnetts visual gags and sarah silvermans whacky goofball off the wall stuff.

How'd I lie? I dare you to tell me how I was lying. And are you implying that you didn't say that you would kill someone for ridiculing you because you're gay I have the PM's, do I have to post them?
Lucille Ball was funny. She was an old school comedienne who could elict laughs by actions as well as words. I used to watch her on TV years ago.
Other female comediennes:
Goldie Hawn
Paula Poundstone
Lily Tomlin (one ringy dingy, two ringy dingys)
Ruth Buzzi
The complete unfunniness of Dane Cook actually negates like 1,000 Funny Points from the male side, so both genders are actually pretty even.
Because a male comedian = blank sheet, representing the everyday person out there who cracks jokes about life and it's so funny because you can relate to him because he's not intimidating. female comedian= has an agenda because she's female. Her jokes seem defensive and aggressive as though she's angry at men all the time. It's not that the content is less funny, it's because it comes from the mouth of a 'minority', made a minority in the business due to old performance law and male dominance. HellsAngel2c
Yeah, this.
I'm not really big on stand-up in general so I couldn't name names, but there are definitely a lot of female actors and writers with great comic timing and sensibility. Julia Louis-Dreyfus during the peak of Seinfeld is my favourite example. Obviously pretty much everyone on that show was great, but as the main female character her performance was at least as good as the men.
How'd I lie? I dare you to tell me how I was lying.
I'd tell you, but obviously you'd deny it and attempt to trilialize anything I have to say.And are you implying that you didn't say that you would kill someone for ridiculing you because you're gay I have the PM's, do I have to post them?-Big_Red-
idunno ive always kind of enjoyed Sarah Silverman and Lisa Lampanelli.
The problem is they generally do not get much publicity until they star in moves; as far as standup goes, they do not get much coverage.
Just watch Curb Your Enthusiasm; half of the actresses on there are comediennes of some sort

There have been a few stand-up specials hosted by women that I've laughed at. And it's always when they try to sell themselves as a 'person' not as a 'woman'.
For example, there was a skit based on late-night chat sessions with the comedian and her mom.
I laughed, I liked it, i could relate somewhat.
We all have parents, but we don't all have 'dumb boyfriends'.
