Alright, so I just got done watching fight club, and the ending confused me. Why did the Brad Pitt Tyler Durden die/go away and the other Tyler Durden stay alive? The movie confused me sooooo many times, plus I didn't really get the motive/reason of the movie.:?Zeldaguy16
In the book, Edward Norton actually killed himself, they had to pretty it up for the movies. My explanation is that Edward Norton actually thought he killed himself, 100% believed he killed himself which killed Brad Pitt.
As for the motives / reasons of the movie, it's one of the most philosophical movies ever made, preaching society's faults, non-materialism, and non-mainstream living. Try watching it again, pay closer attention.

I wouldn't really go so far as to say it's 'one of the most philosophical movies ever'. But anyway, no, he goes to a hospital in the book and just dies there, or maybe he just stays there really debilitated, I don't remember, but he doesn't outright kill himself in the book one way or another. The narrator doesn't die at the end of the book, he just hospitalises himself to stop 'Tyler' making trouble for a while. The way i read it is that he's going to get better, he's going to get out and Tyler is going to start running things again. The narrator isn't cooperative (the deep scepticism he shows towards his therapy sessions) and I don't think he has his personality disorder sorted out, OR HE WOULDN'T HAVE SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FACE.
The end of the film is less coherent, I think it's generally assumed that he shot himself to 'kill the Tyler in him'. It's positive in a strange way, with him standing there next to Marla, it's more of a traditional Hollywood ending.
The way I see it is Tyler the whole movie was trying to make Nortons character "let go", and stop caring about everything, because thats one reason Tyler was even there was he was willing to do anything, nothing was holding him back...Nortons character shooting himself proved that he had let go, and was willing to risk his life and not care the outcome, which proved that he didn't need Tyler anymore.SaintLeonidas

I WANNA GO OUT AND KNOCK SOMEONE OUT! Its such a bad influence lol. Ahwell its still a great movie.
