Before this gets misread I am not saying I don't like film interpretations of books. On the contrary I generally really enjoy them if they translate well and not too much of the source material is changed, examples including Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Ghost, Boy A, War Horse, Life of Pi etc are adaptations of books I have really enjoyed.

However there are a few that made so many changes and poor direction choices that I felt so angry that they ruined a fantastic series of books which I enjoyed so much while growing up and I fear that if I ever read them again, I'll keep on being reminded of these atrocities and won't be able to enjoy them.

The first of these is "The Golden Compass". Where do I start with this one? It doesn't even have the same name as the original book! His Dark Materials was a fantastic young adult book triology and I was really looking forward to the film versions of these books. This film suffered from poor casting choices, toning down from many of the sinister themes, removal of key sub-plots and, worst of all, changing the ending so it was "happy". Apparently they were going to have the original ending at the start of the second book to give the second film "the most exciting beginning possible" but that meant that the film had to do well to warrant a sequel in the first place! Lo and behold a sequel looks like it won't be made after poor box office performance, and it's probably for the best as I wouldn't want the rest of the books being butchered in the same way.

The second is "Stormbreaker". The Alex Rider books were another series I loved growing up and I thought they would make great films if executed well. I was so disappointed by the film version of the first book, mainly due to the god awful (almost unforgiveable) ending that completely different from the book to try and include his love interest more in the film. I can also not understand why they changed the lead antagonist's nationality from Lebanese to American. I actually thought about 70% wasn't all that bad but it was certainly nowhere as thrilling as the book was and like with The Golden Compass, no sequel will be made and with good reason!

The last one is "Angels and Demons". While I don't hate this as much as the other two because it's actually a decent film in it's own right, but far too much was either cut or changed that made the book a really riveting read with unexpected plot twists. There were a lot of changes I didn't approve of such as keeping the fourth cardinal alive, not having the Cemerlengo immolate himself in front of the Vatican, having the assassin die in a completely different way and the sub-plot of the Pope being the Cemerlengo's biological father (a really surprise twist in the book). However, some of these are perhaps understandable with translating a book to feature. The most annoying change I felt was made was the exclusion of Maximillian Kohler from the film altogether. He was a really fascinating character and ended up being important for the revelation at the end, but instead the film rather half-heartedly fills in his role at the end with a side character with bearly a couple of minutes of screen time.

So there are my personal film adaptations I cringe over every time I think or read about, do you have any you'd like to share?

easily the count of monte cristo (the 2002 one)

This one is actually kind of backwards because I saw the movie before reading the book. At the time, I thought the movie was pretty good. A few years later when in highschool, I decided to read the book and realized how much they changed.

The only explanation is that whoever wrote the script just read a few random pages and then filled in the rest himself :P

The Bourne movies. It was like they just took a massive crap on the books, set them on fire, and tossed them on a boat for a viking burial.

I agree with Angels and Demons. They changed so many things that didn't even need to be changed, like: Vittoria's dad becoming a lab partner, no Kohler, Langdon doesn't go into the helicopter, Camerlengo burns himself where no one can see him, last cardinal is saved, Vittoria isn't kidnapped, the hassassin is just a hired gun. And why did they show the audience that the Camerlengo was using a parachute? I really liked the book and was looking forward to the movie, but they really butchered it.

I Am Legend: I wasn't psycho mad, just mad that they drastically changed the entire ending of the story. I didn't care that he was black or that it was in the city, it was just that the main plot that was changed just to make it your typical action/shock horror film where Neville is the hero. Here's the difference and if you haven't read the book, I suggest you take a look into it:
In the book's ending, the role of the vampire and the humans are reversed: In the end, the vampires evolve and become the main inhabitants of the Earth where as Neville becomes a "legend" to be feared and is executed by the new inhabitants. The whole situation was so absurd that Neville chuckled and uttered his last word/thought, "[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend." Now that was deep and much more horrifying.
I don't see a problem with the Dan Brown adaptations they're just taking terrible books by a terrible author and making terrible films out of them

Every Jules Verne adaptation. They usually add shitty science fiction, retarded situations and humour and change characters. The books are always superior. People who only see the movies have no clue how elegant Verne's books actually are.

The original ending of the movie was much better. Throughout the movie it's hinted that the vampires are intelligent but that ending seals it - and leaves room for a sequel. You can see it online. Whoever replaced it was an idiot as the new ending is bad and now the studio scored a hit but can't make a sequel.

Watership Down. The accents alone killed it, and the whole water-colored look didn't do it any favors, either.

Awesome, incredible book, though.

Actually, "The Golden Compass" was the name of the book for the North American publishing.

In all honesty they weren't very good books anyway.

Hmm, interesting I actually thought "Shutter Island" was pretty faithful to the original book with the ambiguous ending deliberately put in to make the audience want to see the film a second time. Why did you think it was horrible?

I'm not terribly sure, I enjoyed the book, but the movie just left me cold. There was no mystery or anything, you could kind of tell after ten minutes of the movie that the main character wasn't all there. It just seemed too formulaic.

What exactly happens in WWZ? Nothing, seriously, I read the book, it's not even that long to begin with and the plot is basically just a guy interviewing people, I saw it much more as an anthology than a novel...hell you could even say that the zombie part was secondary to the "plot", I hated how the zombie part was ridiculized and "normalized" on the books.

What was wrong with Into the Wild? Hm. Y'know, I know it's an adaptation of a comic book, but there were a number of things I really disliked about the adaptation of "V for Vendetta." As a movie it's pretty good. As an adaptation it's... ugh...

Nice to see some interesting discussions going on here.

Ooh I just thought of another: "A Series of Unfortunate Events". I read the first three books deliberately in time for the film. For children's books they were pretty grim and depressing but they definitely filled a niche. So then whose bright idea was it to fit three books into a 90 minute family film, move the ending of the first book to the end of the film (giving the villain a second chance) and substituting a ridiculous and unnecessary train sequence for the ending of the first third of the film and casting JIM CARRIE as the villain?!

I've never read a Stephen King book before now, I'm in the middle of "It", this book is as thicker than Don Quixote, if the rest of his books are as meaty then I imagine it's quite a challenge to adapt them, they'd really have to cut a lot out; might make a better mini-series.

Belive it or not, i've never had a hatered for film adaptations because i find myself reading books that dont get turned into movies or such. With the exception of Harry Potter and Nico the Unicorn (God, i loved that book), i have never read a book before or after seeing the movie. Its not like i dont read, but i have a tendacy to read or try to read unknown books, instead of famous ones. I did read A Song of Ice and Fire before the show but that was a show, not a film.

One thing that comes to mind would be Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I read that book when I was 10, and I'm still reading the series today (it's still ongoing, and damn I can't just stop part way,) but holy mother of mercy was that movie poor. It changed the villain, the plot, and even the ages of the characters (which is extremely relevant to the plot.) And they're making a sequel...

People like to pretend that the Harry Potter vein isn't completely dry.

I agree with I Am Legend.  That book (and its ending) are so amazing, and they just ruined it with that (latest) adaptation.

Also, Dune.  One of my favorite books, and that David Lynch adaptation is just...awful.  It had a unique look and feel to it, but they just dropped, changed, or downright ruined so many parts.  I mean weirding modules?  Really, WEIRDING MODULES???!!?  C'mon!
