I never considered rap music. First, becaue there is no singing talent, and second, there is no musicianship talent. Talking over computer beats etc... autotune etc... Singing and musical intrumental ability are what I define as music, others may have different standards... but anyways.

The first timer I over felt any emotion from a rap song was this week. I don't know whos song this is, if anyone can help please tell me. It was a song about a guy growing up being gay and what he went through by people around him. It just hit me hard. I have never heard a song be about being gay, and I have listebned to tons of music and bands in my life. I never thought I would hear an open artist talking about being gay in a song on a mainstream radio station. Hell, I never heard 1 song where an artist was open and talking about it.

I started crying when I heard it because it caught me off guard, and everything he said in it is exactly what I dealt with and wondered growing up and knowing I was gay when I was 11. I haven't ever felt such emotion from a rap song before. I have heard this song played at least 10 days times after in the period of 2 days, so it must be a popular song right now. Does anyone know what this song is called and who its from? Thanks.

I still don't think rap is music, its more of talking about what is going on in your mind/ telling storys. But I am glad I finally felt some emotion from a rap song for the frist time in my life. Can somebody PLEASE tell me what is the name of the song? Thanks. I still cannot believe I finally heard a song when an artist openly talks about growing up gay and its popular on mainstream radio. What a huge step forward for kids growing up gay right now and getting an inspirational song. I wish I had heard a song like this when I was growing up gay as a kid. :(

Because rap music is all about emotion. You have to feel the music. How the sound was created doesn't matter. And you didn't feel any rap music before because maybe you didn't grow up in a certain environment and couldn't relate. Rap music makes you bob your head. No other music makes me want to bob my head like rap music does. You gotta feel it.

In my opinion it's hard to feel sorry for complete retards like most rappers are. I also just hate the sound of it so I'm probably biased.

I think rap is more about talking about whatsin your head, not music to me, but its something different. Not better or worse, just different to me. Only rap I heard before is mainstream garbage, and like Eminem and Tupac talking about gangster BS

Hm not sure which the song you were talking about is. But also check out Same Love by Macklemore. It's about homosexuality as well. Quite beautiful. As for emotional rap (dat second verse):

I generally check when people put up "awesome and different rap" and I'm always disappointed. But damn man, that was actually really good.

Oh that is actually the song I mentioned (not the one linked); Same Love by Macklemore. But he's not talking about growing up gay. He's straight himself but uses the song to speak out against homophobia. The video is beautiful

Impressed, though musically it's way to simple for me (i'm a massive prog head, Cynic, Opeth, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Meshuggah, Rush etc. etc., and also love Jazz, so I need the music, tempos and rhythm to change constantly), but the rapping/lyrics are really good. I usually can't take rap seriously because of the stupid lyrics, but here he really knows how to work with the slang while still making the lyrics sound mature and well thought out.

lulz. It's not serious but it's good stuff. There's plenty of other real life stuff on that album like Wings, Thin Line, A Wake, Neon Cathedral etc. : >

Yeah I can definitely see where you're coming from as a prog fan. The beat is mostly the same loop over and over again. But I'm glad you appreciated the lyricism and delivery. It's quite a powerful track.

Also he sounds like a guy who really means what he sings/raps, with most mainstream rappers I almost always have that "fake feelings" vibe, like they sing about how to respect woman and then go beat their wife home afterwards (I don't mean specifically like that, but you catch my drift). Would really be interesting if someone mixed rapping with more complex tempos and rhythms. Like I would really want to hear how rapping over something like Meshuggah with their weird rhythms (well it's actually more about how they accent, most of their songs are in 4/4, but they use accenting to make everything really messed up and off beat)

Sure will. I am writing all this down. Cant wait pop a beer and listen to all this tonight :). FYI, the only rap I have listened to is: -A lot of mainstream radio songs: "bitches, hoes, bling, da club, yo SHAWTY" crap -A lot of Eminem "I love my daughter my daughter Haley x 1000 songs, a lot of I'll beat your ass etc...,kill my mother, and lyrics calling people f@gs over and over. Dude is a moron and childish. - And a lot of Tupac. He wasn't nearly as bad as the others, but it wasnt good to me and I never felt any emotions from his music either. Not to mention a lot of his music was him talking about hell beat peoples asses just like Eminem, which is pathetic and childish to me. And from what I hear from nearly everyone who likes rap is TuPacand Eminem are the best rappers ever. Which made me not care about listening to any more rap and that rap must suck if thats the best they have, because I didn't relate to sh!t they were talking bout and the "tough and ill beat yo ass if you fvck with me" lyriucs got old fast. Also, hearing this song and getting me crying has given me hope for a rap for the first time in my life. I would like some other recommendations for good meaningful rappers. I doesn't have to be about homosexuality either.

Maybe you just don't understand rap music. The beats aren't supposed to be complex. They are supposed to sound good. Like a good melody. The combination of the melody, the drum beat, and he rhythm of the rappers flow all combine together to sound good. You aren't supposed to be analyzing how the instruments blend together and how complex the music making is. You just feel the beat. It's not about critical listening.

I don't analyze either, but complex rhythms make the music more dynamic for me. If a song is using the same beat through 5-7 minutes I'll get bored, having the beat switch a bit breaks the monotony and can very effectively be used to convey various emotions. While I understand rap is founded on simple beats because of its street birth, I still think that it would be a very interesting experiment to dabble in odd time signatures and rhythms.

I used to love Eminem and old school rappers like Tupac. Haven't really listened to rap in a few years now though.

Anything Pete Rock makes is great. Wish those two would come back and make more music together. Would be better than 99% of whats out now.

i don't like most American rap music because their isn't enough musicality and the subject matter, i either don't care about or are repulsed by.

i am however a huge fan of the Japanese hip hop scene, a whole lot of talent i can appreciate.

the only American rap i can stand is stuff that is comical or light hearted I.E digital underground, early Eminem, weird al.

yea contrary to popular belief, rap does actually take talent.

when i first heard Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique, i literally got shivers down my spine.

[QUOTE="TidusIsBest"][QUOTE="MrPraline"] He's greatness. Was such a fresh breath of air. You should check out the whole album (The Heist by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis). BMD004
I definitely will man! I am so glad I discovered someone who talk about issues I have never heard being addressed in music

Check out "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore, as well. It hits you like a sack of bricks.

I fvcking despise that song

Nother emotional song

Typical OT with its ignorance on rap music. TC, listen this The album is called Charity Starts at Home. Also, check out Illmatic by Nas. Your views of hip hop will change.
