Tragedy struck in New York on August 10, 2011, when a woman driving a Toyota Highlander lost control of her vehicle and struck three pedestrians, killing them. News 10 out of Albany, New York, reports that the driver, LuAnn Burgess, told police that her flip-flop somehow got jammed under the accelerator pedal, which resulted in the vehicle speeding out of control.article

Have you ever driven in flip-flops and had one get stuck? I have but it resulted in the killing of nothing. Pretty brutal, though.

I knew it! Flip-flops are an instrument of death! Plus peoples feet show...gross.

I saw that on the news last night. The latest reports on local radio say that she was wearing her husband's flip-flops, and they were too big.

It's a pretty sad story.

Thats kinda sad.

CNN has been going on about it today and people are asking if the woman is going to be charged with manslaughter later on.

Isn't it illegal to wear improper footwear while driving? I know it is here in Australia - and it's to avoid things like this happening.

Well wearing flip-flops away from an immediate pool or beach area is one of the ways nature lets you know who to avoid and ignore, but it's sad to see something like this causing the death of others.

There's a reason drivers ed doesn't let you wear flip flops. Well, at least in my school.

Sounds like the same lame-ass excuse I used to try and explain why I ran a red light when I was 16.

I can add this to my list of reasons why it's annoying when women wear their goddamn flip flops everywhere instead of real shoes. fidosim

I'm in no way excusing her actions, but when you find yourself in a situation where you are panicking you forget common sense. You and I can say take it out of gear from behind a keyboard but she may have lost her mind when she was racing towards people and couldn't think straight at the time. It's no different than some troops in the military who train for weeks what to do in a gun battle only for them to freeze up and do something stupid when they have to fight for real (yes, I've seen it first hand).

I remember in driving school we were taught to NOT drive with flip-flops or loose sandals just because of this.

Usually I take it off and just put it on the seat or right next to me and drive barefoot.

Some dude was hit by lightning while I was vacationing in FL from NY. Go awesomely random deaths! (My condolences to friends and family)

Example? Texting while driving is illegal in NYS, but how do you prove that? I know people who hold their phones below the level of the window so it's not visible to other drivers and text away (not while I'm riding with them, though... I'll go ape**** on you if you answer your phone while I'm a passenger... I was in a car hit by an 18-wheeler, and have no interest in repeating the experience).

It's even trickier with flip-flops: are we going to issue the troopers X-ray devices to see what your footwear is while cruising 70 MPH on the Northway? Or will this be like other offenses, where you have to be pulled over first before you are charged (in which case, you simple remove the offending footwear and claim "I was driving barefoot?")?

Nothing new about the incident, by the way. I'll be keeping an eye on it, though.

Seriously...this really happened, seems just about anything can kill you there days.
