I think more people should get involved in this because it's for a good cause. :)

It is when you donate your computer processing power to a network of computers called 'distributed computing.'

People from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world.

Why does Stanford need this much power?

They need it to simulate protein folding for research. Protein mis-folding is the cause of cancer and other related diseases.

Every single computer added to the network bings us one step closer to a cure for cancer.

Here is their homepage.

I think ALL schools should have a client on all of their computers. At my school, many computers are left on or on standby doing nothing. They could all be doing something great for humanity.

I think Microsoft and Apple should integrate this into their next operating system. Hey, Sony did it with the PS3! What can't they do it too?

Look at all these computers in schools! They could be folding right now! :x

The client can also run in the background when it is being used by a student. The client is designed to use the processing power that isn't being used by the user.

So it doesn't have to be on 24/7.

What are your thoughts on this?

I understand that there is a 'Join the Gamespot Folding Team!' thread in PC Hardware discussion, but this is more about why

people should get involved and people's thoughts on the whole thing.

I do it, the bashers will come in and say running all of those computers will just waste electricity. In my experience on other forums, you will get flamed because it is supposed to be voluntary.

My thought is that if they made a crease in the middle of that proten it would help a lot more in the folding of it then tossing 1s and 0s at it.

I sometimes do it on my PS3, but not that much, my mum will get angry at me for leaving things on, and it doesn't help that the PS3 probably uses more power than most things in my house. Good idea about putting it on school computers though, all the ones at my college are always left on standby.

Basically instead of having one computer with 1000 processors there's loads of processors spread throughout the world connected via the internet. Supercomputing programs like this are already broken down into many parts when they're made, just with this type of processing they're more spread out. Basically it reasearches how proteeins 'fold'. This folding occurs due to hydrogen and disulphide bonds being created which bend the long string of amino acids. The resulting shape known as the tertiary structure is needed for proteins to fit together for various purposes such as enzymes in digestion.

There's no way that can be more energy efficient than a centralized array of CPUs. This whole scam is one of the most misguided and wasteful programs ever funded by a major university. Sure, these people are volunteers, but I think they're getting duped into letting their electricity bills go up just so they can say they're contributing a negligible amount of data to a program that will only show minor results. Reduce your electricity output and contribute the savings to real researchers.

Why do you have to be such a killjoy? It's for research for cancer. It's better to have people atleast try then to blow it off as a scam (which you obviously have). So what if you pay an extra few dollars a month, it's for a good cause.

I've contributed hundreds of dollars over the years to cancer research, not to mention lots of my time. If you're really interested, you can unplug the PS3 and help out for real.

Hey! I'm the killjoy here!

And I'm folding at home right now! I just finished my socks and now I'm folding my shirts.

Its definately worth it if you have an 8 Series GPU or higher in your computer (ie nVidia 8800GTS or 9600 or 260 etc etc), they all support CUDA technology, which can be utilised by a special version of Folding@Home. Its faster than most processors (if not all), and much faster than a PS3 in terms of the speeds and the types of proteins that the GPU can calculate.

Well, maybe not a scam per se, more like an opportunistic charity.

Yes, it may do good work, but the doctors making their high income salaries are convincing normal people to foot the bill for their experiments. No doubt, the research is useful, but you can guarantee that if anything significant were discovered using this tech, there would be several scientists right there to sign up for their book deals.
