I don't believe they have the power to do it, but they are trying. Imagine if there was no more fast food restraurants. NO more Burger King, McDonalds, KFC or anything fast food. That be insane ? I can already see people at street corners selling illegal burgers and fries, lmao !! And then they have the nerve to consider making Frozen deserts, microwave popcorn, cake mixes and margarine, wtf ! Can't believe they actually considering this. What are your thoughts ? Can you live without fast food ?

On the other hand, i guess we would have better restraurants to help us forget fast food.

Link below: This is really being considered ,further reduction would prevent more than 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 new cases of coronary heart disease each year.

I don't get why anyone would be ok with government telling us what to do and eat an drink. We should have the right to be a fatty or just have it once in awhile. I get some things are unhealthy but who is the government to decide? Will the start banning or excessively taxing anything deemed unhealthy or dangerous?

I don't think the gov't will ban those things, it would be too disruptive. I do however see private industry taking measures to reduce trans fats or eliminate them if feasible (i.e. unless it would interfere with the profitability or taste of the product or perhaps its shelf life).

And destroy the entire fast food market in the process? Yeah right, like those multinationals like mcdonalds will just let that happen.

If you actually read the article, it seems there are very few fast food items that have trans fats. Mainly just items fried in oils than contain it. With that, I don't think the government has any place telling us what we can or can't eat. It's funny that so many complain about these issues though yet keep voting these people in. Go figure.

They're banning trans fats, not fast foods. You can make fast food without what is essentially poison.

If people got half as outraged over important things (like childhood obesity, domestic violence, poverty wages) as they did over their Twinkies and Happy Meals, the world would be a significantly better place.

Since we have so much subsidized healthcare now, I'm okay with this. Trans fats shouldn't exist. You can make food that tastes just as good with saturated fats and other oils.

@BluRayHiDef: You're an idiot.

Also, this is a good thing, anything to help the atrocious level of health in this country is good.

People aren't taking responsibility in their hands, so the government is stepping in, and I applaud it.

So how about they also stop subsidizing wheat and corn? By doing so, they are encouraging consumption of unhealthy foods while simultaneously banning others.

A problem with these bans is that it gives the impression that anything that hasn't been banned must be good for you.

They should focus on better education rather than these silly bans.

If the government is doing it, it has to be a bad thing. The government would never want to protect the health of it's citizens.

People have the choice on whether to eat fast food or not. Nobody is forcing you to eat McDonalds.

Do people really need the government to hold their hand and tell them how to live their lives?

No, because botulism and e coli can cause serious illness which can possibly lead to death. There needs to be some sort of regulation so that people wouldn't die.

Ah, the good old slippery slope argument (psst, it's a faulty argument). Your government has been banning numerous things in food for quite a long time, and you haven't seen society collapse yet. Trans fats are pretty bad, and unnecessary.

Many people arent taking responsiblity for their kids.

Example:

Should we re-institute slavery to solve the employment crisis, and take children to a place we know they'll be responsibly cared for?

personally, it wouldn't affect me at all. in my adult life, i've only gone to fast food places for coffee late at night, when nothing else is open.

one thing about fast food places, that is quite overlooked is that they are sanitary. you can see the kitchen from the counter, so it encourages managers to keep the kitchen clean. i've worked fine dining before, and you don't always get that in closed door kitchens.

Ban soda? lol but no.

Also this is a huge exaggeration. Fast food won't disappear from the face of the Earth nor will it ever. Why? Fast food is convenient also fast food isn't the only culprit. There are sit down restaurants with much more atrocious foods with 1000+ calories and some of those places don't reveal their nutritional information.

People just need to learn self-control but also how to eat. For example, calories aren't bad. They're a unit of energy. Too little or too much is bad so learn what your body needs.

How Is fast food really any different, thousands of people die each year because of it and obesity in general.
The government is right to step in. Obviously some people do need their hands held when 2/3s of the U.S. is overweight.

Uh they're just talking about banning some fats. The businesses wouldn't leave, they would just use different oil and stuff.

All it would do is force them to use healthier oils. No point in trans fats anyway - California did it years ago I believe.

Goddamn people, read the article. Nothing about banning fast food in there. Simply banning one type of extremely unhealthy cooking oil, which some fast food business are already moving away from.

won't ban aspartame that's linked to causing tumors but ban trans fats. ok...
