That when you die, you will never see your loved one again and both of you will cease to exist, and you will become as conscious as rocks that do not know each other anymore? Does it sadden you that your relationship has to end this way, after all you have been through together?

I guess it won't matter to me when I'm dead, but I'd prefer to be able to have some manner of consciousness for forever. It makes me sad to think of all the things I may miss out on due to death.

Do I want that? Of course not. But I'm not going to believe in something because it provides me false hope of a happy ending.

HessenKnight

Pretty much this. ^

It saddens me and frightens me a little to think about it, but I'm not about to believe what a priest or anyone else tells me about the issue just because it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I find the idea that I won't care due to my death more unnerving then the actual aspect of dieing. But like today, tomorrow and the next day, when I do think about it, it doesn't bother me much, I'm still young, and we've all gotta die some time.

The thought does sadden me yes, but..

It also encourages me to live the best life I can now; and while the thought of death isn't appealing, once it actually happens I will not have the ability to contemplate it.

I feel just fine about that.

I cherish every second I get to spend with my friends and family, and when I die I will be oblivious to the consequences of my death so that is ok. My body will go to create new life, and I will become a part of the earth I love so very much.

See? Atheists can be optimistic romantics about death

of course. incredibly. Im not sure what you are getting at though? That I should then believe in God and Jesus because of this? False hope, incredible denial? I'm quite confused on this subject. Sure, religion sounds better then what you just posted, but that gives them no validity.

How do you know that religious beliefs are "false hope"? I could just turn around and say whatever belief you hold about death is "false hope." The very fact that you have adopted a belief shows you have done what religious have done, by saying, "This is what I believe will happen after I die." I apologize if I sound mean, i dont' mean to be cruel.

Except what he believes will happen when he dies is his consciousness will cease to exist, and his body will decay and return to the earth, that's it, the end. As opposed to going to heaven where you'll be in the presence of god, will see your loved ones again and will spend the rest of eternity in pure bliss if you would only accept christ and repent of your sins.

Now, if neither was true, and you had to choose, which one would you say sounds more like it's giving people false hope?

I ponder these things far too often as it is and it deeply saddens me but it doesn't mean I'm going to lie to myself and those around me by claiming that there is a magical god in the sky that will give us all nice new vacation homes when we die. If it turns out that way after I die then all the better, but I'm not about to believe in something like that because some guy told me to because he either hears voices and is insane or is a filthy liar.

Seeing as I would cease to exist I don't think I would care much.

Also I don't get this whole scaring people into religion thing. If religion was really so good perhaps it wouldn't need threats to get people to believe in it.

I not saying one side is definitely right or wrong, no one really knows what happens when you die, but you have to admit, the religious option does sound too good to be true. :P

Impotent is a good word for it.

There's the deep level of acceptance in the life-death cicle for me however as a non-internet tough guy who enjoys life and finds death to be an awfully boring state I could use some other alternatives if it was up to me. Also I find the whole "I won't care when I'm dead" utterly conformist and self-centered. Thou that just me saying XDD

I'll be dead, I'll be incapable of feeling any sort of loss. The knowledge that nothing is past this life will just make me want to live in the now and enjoy my time with my significant others just that much more.

When i´m here, death is not. When death is here, i am not.

I won´t ever experience death upon myself, the nature of death forbids it. If religious scriptures holds true, i will be here, just in a different form -- so "i" am not dead, since i still participate in a realm. If religious scriptures promotes false beliefs, then "i" will seize to be, and that is not bad. Nothing is not bad, nothing is at the very least and at the very most exactly that; nothing. Why apply fear or belief to this?

The Greek Hoplites were fearless soldiers, not because of fanaticism, butbecause they all understood this concept of life and death.

I really do not see how anyone cannot believe in life after death. If we are consciously alive right now it can't be just by coincidence. I mean how do you explain that we just happen to live a 50-100 year lifespan in a universe that is 15 billions of years old that we know of. And when you put all the mass there is in the universe compared to us its just impossible to believe that we are just alive by coinsidense.

This is pretty much spot on.

I personally believe something does happen when one dies, though I do not believe you are ushered to heaven to sit next to God on the throne with all your family. I believe more in one existing as a spirit in the world after death.

Why can't it be coincidence? Because if it was that would mean there is no one looking after us and life is just random chance and chaos? Yes, that is more bleak but I don't see why that cannot be.

Flies also live somewhere around three weeks, iirc, elephants live about as long as we do, and turtles live 100+ years easily, what exactly does that prove? :?

rubber-chicken

Nope, not in the least. If I'm no more conscious than a rock, then I WON'T CARE that I don't know her any more.

So...that sort of erases any kind of problem immediate.

Granted, if I die first, then she'll be sad that I'm gone (that is, until she dies too). But she would've been sad ANYWAY, regardless of if my whole consciousness disappears or if I have to wait around in Heaven for her to meet me. Doesn't change anything for HER one way or the other.

And regardless of that, let's also be clear that having an emotional aversion to something doesn't mean it's not a fact. It upsets me to hear about rapes and murders, but they happen. Much as I'd like to BELIEVE that they aren't real, they still happen. My wants don't have a hell of a lot of impact on what actually IS.

Conformist? Practical, I'd say...xaos
The acceptance is. But it's more than that when you see plenty of ppl use it to take comfort in it because the results of their actions in life, especially their failures as well as what they leave behind "won't matter" to them after they are over and out. "This is it and nothing shall matter to me afterwards" Could be easily seen as just the extreme opposite of the comfort found in the belief in an after life. There's a thin line between acceptance and conformism.

No, because I will have lived my live around the ones I love, knowing this was my only opportunity to share experiences with them. That would be enough for me. I would die content so long as I was able to leave parting words to those I cared for. If I couldn't, then I wouldn't know either way, would I? :P

Well you've got to start off by remembering that how you feel about something has absolutely no bearing on whether or not it is true or false. That being said the thought of dying sucks. The sooner that you accept the inevitability of death though the sooner you can get on with enjoying life.
