I'm entering my third week of a 3-month probation my dollar store job as a stocker-cashier. One of the problems I run into is that sometimes when I'm working the cash register, my mind would wander off for a few seconds and I'd close the cash register and forget to give the customer their change, then they have to wait for the next client to pass for me to give change... I then feel embarassed about it. It's happened about 2-3 times now.

Has this happened to anyone else? How often did it happen? I don't think I'll be working here past the probation if this keeps happening.

!! And TC, I suggest you start keeping focused, customers can and will get pissed at you if you make it a usual thing.

When I was a cashier at Best Buy I had that happen once in twice in my time there. Thankfully the customers I had weren't angry about it and just patiently waited as I called for a supervisor to enter an authorization to open my till. Now Best Buy has an electronic system which allows cashiers to open their own tills whenever they want(all openings are tracked) but having that back then would have saved me a lot of embarassment.

You'll get the hang of it eventually. I have a friend who owns his own dollar store in a small town. When he's underhanded I'll head over and run the place for him if he really needs the help. Usually he'll buy me something to eat or hook me up with a pack of smokes for helping him. My biggest problem is remembering what to tax, and what has a deposit on it. I have wasted a few feet of receipt paper messing that up. :P

You need to keep focused. But yeah, we're all human. What I hated was when I gave back too much change and my drawers came up short.

Maybe being a cashier isn't your thing.
