As most of you know, there has been 9 suicides @ Foxconn in 2010 (Jan-Present)

However after checking WHO (World Health Organization) archives, I found that the suicide rate in China is about 14 / 100,000 people / year.

Considering Foxconn has 400,000 employees in ShenZhen, the norm would be 4*14 = 56 suicides / year. Since it is only near the end of may, the average would be 23 suicides so far in 2010.

Therefore my question is following: Isn't the 9 less than the expected 23? Why is the media making such a huge deal out of this then? I mean I understand the working conditions there can be considered inhumane, but I consider that a whole other issue and it shouldn't be tied in with the suicide rates.

Thanks for your thoughts!

--For the people who don't know what I am talking about - Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world and they are based in China (they build the apple products). Here is an article talking about the suicides: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j3oGhnvg--hWMiOvxx8cAuD2yZOwD9FR86AO3

I think that's a very fair way to look at it

They're actually below what would normally be the suicide rates

What's more impressive is their line of work and having suicide rates that low

I'm sure you heard of that guy who commited suicide after being interogated for losing an iPhone prototype, this is the same company and they've just pushed into double figure suicides for this year. @TC You should also look at the attempted rate, acording to one article there have been about 40 attempted suicides at their factory this year.

Well i think they were stopped by their supervisors, most of them were trying to jump out of the factory windows.

It has a 400000 strong work force nd it's based in china which has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, it's not suprising they have a lot of suicides

It's not just Apple, all the 3 major home consoles are made by Foxconn along with some computing hardware.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh my ass off *worker goes to jump* *boss sees him about to jump* "Hey, get your ass back to work" *worker steps down from ledge* "yes sir...*

No, that's his point

The suicide rates there are lower then the national average

So while suicide is still happening it's nothing near the pace it's happening elsewhere
