As most of you know, there has been 9 suicides @ Foxconn in 2010 (Jan-Present)
However after checking WHO (World Health Organization) archives, I found that the suicide rate in China is about 14 / 100,000 people / year.
Considering Foxconn has 400,000 employees in ShenZhen, the norm would be 4*14 = 56 suicides / year. Since it is only near the end of may, the average would be 23 suicides so far in 2010.
Therefore my question is following: Isn't the 9 less than the expected 23? Why is the media making such a huge deal out of this then? I mean I understand the working conditions there can be considered inhumane, but I consider that a whole other issue and it shouldn't be tied in with the suicide rates.
Thanks for your thoughts!
--For the people who don't know what I am talking about - Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world and they are based in China (they build the apple products). Here is an article talking about the suicides: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j3oGhnvg--hWMiOvxx8cAuD2yZOwD9FR86AO3
