Hey im an idiot and downloaded this random crap and it gave me a virus. One of those where the virus itself is telling you that you have viruses, and shows this fake anti virus that it wants you to further download and pay for. One of those. Anyway, does anybody know of a free and effective anti virus I could download? Please, let me know. Thank you.

If you've got scareware like that, it's probably embedded pretty deep. You'll need something like smitfraudfix (make sure you get the real thing; it's a simple, no frills program) along with a good antivirus, and you may have to reinstall windows. It's nasty stuff.

FUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUUUUUUUUUU!!! Ahh man, this is frustrating. Thanks for the help though. I hope I can figure this nonsense out. I just tried Avira, and it still seems as if the virus is preventing it from opening somehow.

AVG and Avast are both decent. You can occasionally pick up promotional codes for basic versions of Kaspersky in magazines.

AVG is fine for me... However, if you've got one specific virus, there are sometimes individual programs designed to deal with that virus.

Get AVG and Ad-Aware Anniversary edition.

Both are free, real-time scanners. AVG scans for viruses, Ad-Aware scans for spyware and tracking cookies.

Been using both for years.

If you want an effective antivirus, just use avast and/or avira. Both softwares are the best ones.

If you can't seem to install any of the above anti-virus programs people have talked about, try restarting your computer in safe mode and see if you can install these programs. If the virus is still blocking your computer from installation, try looking on other sites and see if you can find a solution. Sending your computer for help can work too, but beware there is the possibility you may have to format your computer if they can't solve it.

You can also try a system restore to a point before you downloaded the virus. I'm not sure if that will work, but it shouldn't take any longer than a half hour and is worth a try.
