Just read the first paragraph.... establishing "National Essential Functions" for the private sector and all three branches of the government. Just think about that...

I'm not sure you want to move over here though. Unless you fancy paying the equivalent to $80 to fill your car up with petrol...yes, that's right, we pay about $7.00 or more a gallon over here...that and all the other taxes that are going on...and this country is being taken over by non-English people.

I would rather pay 7.00$ a gallon than live in a country where the President can grant himself unlimited and extraordinary powers in the case of a "National Emergency", which, by the way, he defines!

Well, it has to go through Congress first, doesn't it? And if it does, I highly doubt all the Democrats in there will allow it. That and Bush only has a year and a half left.

What it means is that the President could, in case of an emergency, grant himself unlimtited power over the private sector and the entire Government. He could also keep himself in office indefinitely....

The first option is much worse. If Hilary is elected through the legitimate political process, so be it. It would just mean that America is stupid. But if George Bush, or any President for that matter, was to grant himself/herself these kinds of powers it would be an absolute desecration of everything this Nation is supposed to stand for.

You dont understand man! If a President uses these powers they could become a Dictator! That would leave Bush, or Clinton, or whoever, free to pursue their own military agenda in the Middle East and around the world! How does that not affect Europe?

Well, if the American president becomes a dictator with a military agenda...I doubt China and other countries would lend the US the money they will need for such purposes.

Didn't everyone panic enough about this yesterday?

They're just powers in case of an emergency and sadly any effective powers in such cases are always going to be somewhat dictatorial.  That's nothing new.

There have been emergency powers in place for the President and even other branches of the government for a long time.

But there has never been a law that allowed the President to dictate orders to all branches of government and to seize Private Sector interests. This Directive allows him to become the King of America.

Wow, you people are extremely paranoid.  All this worthless link showed was a bunch a governmental **** about improving the way the all the federal, state ,and local levels of government work together to handle emergency and National Security situations.  Big woop.  If you get "Bush wants to take over everything" from this then you need serious help.

People are so paranoid. Nothing in there says the President can just take over all the government and rule as a king. Congress still controlls the budget and has impeachment power. Any directive that removes that power would be unconstituional and never enforcable. This directive authorizes the executive branch to cut a lot of federal red tape in case of ""Catastrophic Emergency" means any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions;". If the crap hits the fan, I'd like to know the government at least has a plan to secure the nation.

Further more: "21) This directive:

(a) Shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and the authorities of agencies, or heads of agencies, vested by law, and subject to the availability of appropriations;

(b) Shall not be construed to impair or otherwise affect (i) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budget, administrative, and legislative proposals, or (ii) the authority of the Secretary of Defense over the Department of Defense, including the chain of command for military forces from the President, to the Secretary of Defense, to the commander of military forces, or military command and control procedures; and

(c) Is not intended to, and does not, create any rights or benefits, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by a party against the United States, its agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person."

nuttybar

This is a problem how?

I wasn't meaning any offense by saying that. Just drop the matter, I don't feel like going into a whole lot of detail about England in a thread about America.
