For all we know aliens could pound rusty nails into their genitals and stick ice picks in their eyes instead of applauding.

Funny, I do the same thing after I watch a great movie, but everyone always gives me where looks for some reason.
I thinking making obnoxious noise is a universal sign of... something. It's an extension of cheering.
I'm terrible at words.
My point is that if people do anything noisy after sitting quietly for a presentation, it sends the same message, whether it's stomping, or crashing metal together or any of that stuff.
Imagine what they'd think about the process of sex (presuming the alien species would reproduce asexually).domatron23
Most likely they would produce sexually. Sex results in greater genetic diversity among a population, and it's reasonable to think that this would be the case pretty much EVERYWHERE.
If an organism on ANY planet has gotten to the point where it has sentience and has figured out space travel, then I'm gonna take a leap here and say that those aliens probably reproduce sexually.

How would you be able to tell with ice picks in your eyes?As an alien myself, I find it rather strange that you have made this topic. And no, I approve of clapping. It entertains me.

This.
You're quiet, listening tentatively, then you clap to show that whatever you just sat through actually registered in your brain.
Clapping, cheering, yelling, whistling, stomping, booing, they all send the same message.
If i were an alien in an audience and see the audience clapping to a presentation that i myself have found interesting then i would acknowledge that this for of putting 2 hands together in a quick succession a form of approval or a form of appreciation thus i would clap as well to show that i was interested to.
