From how I look at it, we only have one option to survive.

Expand the space program. If we were to take most of the money out of welfare, medicare, etc. and put it all towards space exploration, we could have a colony on mars in just a couple of years. So people who are pro all of those things, do you find it worth it to help continue the existance of the human race, but sacrifice some people who don't work's cable TV? (We can leave some money for people who are physically incapable of creating income or taking care of themselves)

I think we could survive on earth for a few million more years w/o having to goto mars if we would get our heads out of our asses.

TO me though its like we came from mars and screw that up then earth and screw it up and thern back to mars to screw it up again...I take back my last thread..Aliens should kick our ass.

I'm all for it. Some people wouldn't do it without an incentive like increased resources. I believe that once in space, resources can be found and colonies cultivated, but that's not what's important. What matters is the act of self-reliance; No longer having to depend on the Earth.

Steven Hawking said humanity must go to space within the century or we're screwed. So yeah sounds right.

We could survive on earth forever until a huge catastrophe happened, and then we would be mostly wiped out. The problem is that within our lifetimes if we don't get our asses into space and find new resources, we are done as a civilized race. We just can't sustain the amount of people we have. Ever looked at a deer population graph? They grow to insane levels within a year or 2 with the reduction of predators or new laws to prevent hunting, and then they just crash. The population goes down 90%. This is exactly what will happen in the world within the next 20 years. I can garuntee it.

I have a feeling there's no rush to colonise other planets.

Yes, but spending money on silly things instead of getting into space, when we have the existence of our entire race at stake is stupid and not helping anything.

I thought this thread was going to be about ethnic cleansing for some reason.

This.

I saw a movie where the apocalypse was running out of oil, which hindered everything to the point of shutdown. Scary.

no need to cut much, just the military, our current annual military budget has outspent all the money NASA has received since it was created

I wouldn't go that far. It's going to take more than 20 years for oil reserves to run out, and when world governments realize that things are really looking grim, you can bet swift action will be taken. Will it be enough? Let's hope so. Honestly, this scenario unnerves me, because I worry that the "swift action" taken may be more along the lines "Invade another nation to steal their oil" than investing heavily in alternate fuel research.

In the ultimate end though, you're right. Assuming the human race still exists at the time, we will become extinct when the Earth does, unless we manage to find a way off of it. The timespan involved in a "natural" planetary destruction though, is so long that most people have difficulty even thinking about it.

And what does that solve? Nothing. We'll just continue our stupid wars and ignorant behavior on a new planet. From the way people act, the race needs to be ultimately killed off.

If we keep growing at 1.4% let's just say that we keep using 2% more oil every year. That means in 20 years, we will be using 40% MORE oil than we are using right now per year. That is just not sustainable, and it won't be the lack of oil that kills us, but the difficulty in extracting it.

If military budget were to be reduced from all militia in the world we could have a colony in like 20-30 years from now

Unless anyone finds a wy to break the light speed barrier, we're stuck in this solar system. Which still means that we are absolutely doomed.

Mars is all fine and dandy, but we can get there NOW. We just don't send people there, because it's not worth it. Anything that we could hope to get out of it doesn't weigh heavier than the risks of doing it.

I feel that I have to disagree with your methods. I would possibly be out of a job if they cut medicare and all that stuff. The people I take care of are completely unable to live without such programs due to mental and physical handicaps. Cutting medicare would quite possibly cause the organization I work for to shut their doors. I also believe that if people would stop having so many children it would help our chance of survival success by a lot.
