I watched the first FMA anime and loved it, my friend heard me talking about it and now wants to watch it. I've heard though that Brotherhood is better overall? I haven't watched it (yet) so which would be better to recommend to watch first? Keep in mind neither of us usually watch anime. :P

The Manga. Apparently the original FMA anime doesn't follow the correct storyline.

I absolutely love FMA, and consider it to be one of the best anime's of all time if not the best.

The original FMA is shit, utter f*ckery. Watch Brothehood, that one is MILES better.

Don't listen to all of these people saying Brotherhood is the best. The original has far better character development and storyline. The only fault is the ending. Brotherhood ruins all of its emotional moments with stupid "funny" animation sequences, I dont know what they are called. Also, Brotherhood drags a lot near the end.

What to watch first,

If your only going to watch one, Brotherhood.

If you intend to watch both, FMA.

Brotherhood is by far a better series, but FMA still has its merits that you would not apprectiate  if you watched Brotherhood first(it's like Hellsing Ultamate vs Hellsing TV).

All the story  elements introduced in FMA from the manga are used for their intended plot purpose.

There is also a slew of new characters in Brotherhood never even seen or mentioned in FMA.

They never even got around to the night's watch, I mean, Fort Briggs.;)

To put it short, Brotherhood had better VA, better animation, better story, and better/more characters.

The only better parts of FMA is if your in to psychological mind ****** series, as the story goes that route. Brotherhood & the manga are much more Hero's Journey.

Though I did enjoy the aesthetics of the alchamy more in FMA, more magic themed, less scietific equations

Both are great, but overall, Brotherhood was much better.

I'd reccommend watching both, as they turn out very differently; but if you have to pick one, go with Brotherhood

I prefer it that way simply because I don't like reading manga, but want the same story

Brotherhood is leagues and bounds better than the original due to its ending not ending abruptly.

Sucks to be you then :P I can read a manga like four to six times faster than watch an anime. I can't sit through most anime, they put so much filler in them. Really most episodes of most anime should be 10-15 minutes.

Brotherhood because it's actually good. FMA is really medicore.

Would be so much better if Ed and Al didn't exist.

Brotherhood came out after the original ending was finished in the Manga, FMA came out before the ending of the manga and was made up by the creator of the show.  It was good but Brotherhood was amazing and had a much better ending and story.

Brotherhood is my favorite, but they're both good.

I agree. FMA spends more time developing the characters, while FMAB kind of skips that step somewhat and rushes to the new stuff the original series didn't cover.

The original anime was going to overshoot the manga, the author herself told the producers to deviate from the manga.

Nah. I'd say FMA has better voice acting. Alphonse's voice alone makes it better.

My main factor for saying better VA is the much larger main cast that develops in Brotherhood that is filled with top notch VAs.

I felt that Brotherhood skimped on a lot of the character development and emotional moments. Both are good though so I'd recommend watching them both.
