Well then, time for my first proper topic here at these spiffy Gamespot forums (although the untimely sacking of Jeff will probably result in it bubbling under, but hey! I like a challenge).

When someone mentions the furry fandom to you, what is the first thing that springs to mind? A bunch of guys dressed in animal costumes having group sex in hotels, right? Far be it from me to try and debunk this theory (as there is certainly a grain of truth to it, believe me I've seen it happen), I am here in an effort to try and set things a little bit more on the straight and narrow.

I am a fur, and have been for about 3 years now. I do dress up in a costume, and for those who want to see it, point yerself to here http://fursuitphotos.dexcat.net/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=15 (I would link it, but being level 1 is a bit of a pain). However, I do not have sex in it, 900 dollars is a bit too much money to start tearing holes in this thing. Similarly I do not find cartoon animals arousing in the slightest. I am a rare breed of furry, the type who is at least vaguely normal. The only aspects of the fandom that I incorporate into my life are the costuming, and the art. Not the porn.

The fandom has had a not inconsiderable amount of bad press; from CSI to Vanity Fair, everyone seems determined to portray us as sexual deviants (but who can blame them sometimes... some of the stuff I've seen? Ew.); but the tide seems to be turning; everything from positive news reports about Conventions and how they aid the local economy, to appearing in the Guinness Book of Records, it seems that furries are getting more and more attention, and for once it isn't negative.

So where do you stand on this phenomenon? Sick Freaks? Or just a bunch of guys and gals who never lost touch with their inner child? Ask me anything about it, I'll do what I can to answer.

for those unfamilar with the fandom, point yerself to this link: http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Furry_fandom

I think that it's important for people to have the freedom to express themselves in whatever fashion they chose to. That being said, I've never really met a "furry" in person. Or at least if I have, they have not been dressed up. I don't really get the appeal, but if a cute girl was dressed up it might be nice. I guess very similar to role playing except with more costuming.

That being said, I have no problem with people who are "furry". I try to judge people as individuals instead of grouping them together.

cheers,

I can tell you now, if you did meet a furry up close, you'd probably never know it! Due to the negative press surrounding the fandom, we do tend to keep it to ourselves. However, I find that telling new people about my penchant for costume performance makes for an interesting topic of conversation ;) I fursuit for two main reasons:

1) Charity - I've fursuited with others at about 4 large events in the past 2 years and collected thousands of pounds.

2) Public entertainment - nothing quite like parading around Manchester and getting people to smile at you

 I live in Manchester! I don't have a problem with it at all. No one is getting harmed. I think it is part of the wonderful oddities of the world that makes it an interesting place.

Well, I believe that we all have a right to be whoever we wan't to be, so I've got no problem with it. & quite some time ago, I did quite a bit of reading up on the fandom, so I actually know a fair bit about it & can understand some of the reasons why it appeals to certain people. So yeah, I just see furs as people just being who they are......even if it's that "other" side of the fandom that shall not be mentioned on this forum ;)

Well, I actually ran into a few sites along the way & even ended up posting on a forum or two. & yeah, I saw some rather nice artwork. & as a result, I've also seen more of that "other" stuff than 99.99% of people here on GS will probably ever see in their lifetime......I saw many, many interesting things, lawl.

Indeed.....I did think of that as I made that post :P I mean, /d/ is kind of the equivalent to what sort of adult furry art you could expect to find.

"Furries" are no more freaks than trekkies, anime fanatics, star wars fanatics, comic book fanatics, etc.
