The game genie is an enhancement device that allows you to "cheat" in games. I had one for the nes, it allowed me to beat a lot of games that were otherwise impossible because of poor game design. I don't know if the one on the genesis is the same, but on the nes, you insert the cartridge into the game genie and then the game genie into the console. Then it takes you to a cheat code screen. I remember I had a monthly subscription that sent me cheat code catalogs. You can probably find the codes online now at gamefaqs.
