The full page ads on GameSpot are ruining this site for me.

The month long Battlefield ad didn't make me want to buy it, but yes GameSpot, I plan to buy Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and AC: Revelations; no thanks to your ads.

I'm slightly familiar with website ad revenue -- including website traffic, click revenue, and guaranteed money you may accept to graciouslyallow game developers to post ads on your site.

However, I just want to come here and be part of a gaming community.

I suppose my rant can extend to the obnoxious ads I see at sporting events. I also admit they were successful enough to irritate me.

At least take a hint from Joystiq and GiantBomb and go back to banner ads only, PLEASE.

Yes, if you use the Firefox version it will also block most ads that play before videos (but not all of them).

Yes, it is an addon for various web browsers including Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. I don't know if it is compatible with Internet Explorer. It is free and it kills ads. All of them - even including Youtube video ads. I highly recommend it and imagine a fair number of other people here do as well.

How do things like that work? Is there HTML that identifies an ad, in order for Adblock Plus to block it?

The ads come from some IP address, and Ad Block Plus blocks their HTTP requests. And if there is some kind of script involved, it blocks that, too.

Be warned, on google chrome as far as I know there is a significant increase in memory usage. The difference for me on gamespot's front page was 35 K.

I'd be fine with static ads, but full page and animated ads slow my browser down to a crawl, so guess what, now I don't even view the static ads. Guess that any publicity thing doesn't always work so well.

Hey, if people were smart, advertising companies wouldn't exist, and the Internet would be completely free.

Nothing is ever free, no matter if you're not paying for it. Everything comes at a cost.

The internet could be free in the truest sense of the word. The infastructure that supports it costs money to build and maintain, but if that cost were spread around and the internet was run not for profit the cost would be miniscule.

So you state that you understand ad revenue. That gamespot has grown as a company, hired more people, review more games, not to mention video reviews, clean the site up, has a great news section, tons of dev interviews, previews, ETC ETC. And because of this, simple side ads can't fund all of this, so they need full page ads here and there.

Yet you then state "However, I just want to come here and be part of a gaming community." You still can. I don't see how this is hindering you. To be part of arguably the best gaming community on the internet, the company needs to grow and expand to have and sustain this title. But you complain about their ads.

So I'm just not getting this. Do you not want gamespot to have all this great information on their site and just be a forum? Or would you rather them not have ads, and you pay a monthly fee to use their site and forums? I highly doubt you would want that.

In conclusion, please people, stop complaining. You are using this site for free.

Sure, yet it would still not be without cost. The town where my parents live are throwing around an idea to build a free city-wide wi-fi network. Some people are opposed to the idea though because it would have to be paid for via a tax of some kind.

Sounds awesome, the tax would probably be less than the monthly fees, depending on the size of the town. Even if it weren't, I'd bet it's less than any plan that gives you total wi-fi coverage.

True. To create something you have to work for it. But that's not to say that money has to be involved. The internet could be run by collaboration. For example, me and you could go into the woods and cut down some trees, then build a house out of it and share it with others. But of course, such a thought is hard to grasp in a capitalistic world. Don't worry, though. The day will come eventually.
