Anyone Else Find This Completely Ridiculous?

We don't need 4 threads going on at the same time about the same damn thing. Yes, we all have different opinions on religion, but can we keep it to one thread? I think the mods need to step in because it's getting out of control here.

Religion is a contorversial off-topic discussion with many, many beliefs. That's why it's so commonly refranced here.

Its a common topic...but that many is a bit excessive. It usually is interesting to read, though I rarely participate in them.

But we can keep it in one thread instead of having the board flooded with this crap.

Sometimes there is so much animosity on these boards that I think World War III will originate here.

religions, opinions and buttholes are all the same, everyone has one. half the time it's because someone has different thoughts on the subject and instead of posting in the original thread they decide to share with their own thread. it seems to be a common sight on gamespot.

It is human nature to disagree on their sacred beliefs.

often times people create them for the probable fact that it will be popular.  then they can say to themselves, cool, look how popular my topic is...finally.  they knew their topic would quite possibly draw pages of comments, so they post them not so much in the actual value of the question but rather in the ego boost they'll potentially receive from having that particular popular post.

I was actually thinking about that. I think people just want attention, so they create one of these religion threads and get plenty of it. The thing is, if someone actually has something interesting to talk about, it's overshadowed by these garbage threads.

From a philosophical standpoint the Internet is an ideosphere, a place where memetic evolution allows thoughts and ideas to compete without the physical barriers we used to have, like geography. In a perfect scenario under ideal conditions, this competition of ideas will result in a Noocracy, a rule of the wise, as the best ideas that remain become the ones that are the most correct. An advanced form of democracy, that allows every person who is connected to contribute their ideas and memes for human consumption.

Alternatively, it could also do the reverse, the rule of the stupidest. The conflicts you see on the internet are these memes battling it out for superiority and eventually, dominant decider of human social and cultural growth.

And so begins the war of the internets. Who will win? The stupid have strength in numbers but lack the intelligence of the wise. But tell me this, if we have the ability to throough physical barriers, why clog the internet tubes with the religion threads? All it ends up being is hate spam between people who don't know what they're talking about most of the time.

Physical barriers limit to whom information reaches. You exchange information with everyone you encounter, but physically this is limited to those you interact with in the real world. On the internet, people are subjected to all types of information, in many cases things they've not chosen to find out for themselves which allows these memes to survive and compete on a much larger field.

In this way information is passed on that is not limited by what you choose to know. As people encounter information, they will disseminate it and spread the most worthy ones through their actions and determinations, even if they don't agree with it. A creationist counter-argument for instance may highlight and misconstrue some of the best available facts, spreading the idea to tertiary audiences. However, these audiences can under a system of the ideosphere be rerouted back to the original or advanced claims the Creationist are arguing against. Allowing an audience previously ignorant on the subject to let the memes compete again for supremacy.

It "clogs" up the internet not because of choice. It's because this is what these memes have been doing and were meant to do. It's inevitable. Convincing people is beside the point, it's the perpetuation of the meme that is important. Over time it's survival can push the changing of cultures, not just the tide of people you debate against.
