RANT WARNING: So I rush into GameStop on a Saturday night... my college friend, just back from Iraq wants to chat about his time there and play some Halo. I rush out the door, grab my discover card. The cashier helps me pick out the cheapest head set available because im on a budget. I swipe my card and she insists on seeing my card..typical, and my id. The card back is signed. Your signature on the back of your cardis your Id and to be matched the receipt you sign.. when did this ever change? I point this out toher and she stares blankly. When did the average cashier become so incompetent they cant look at the signatures and put two and two together. She tells me she cannot sell me the $15 headset per GameStop policy.. I pulled up in front of the store in a brand new corvette, andthe first thing I would do after stealing a credit card is to purchase the cheapest head set available at GameStop. This just displays no brain activity on the part of the staff: roll: and to deny business in a bad economy as well? Ill have spent thousands of dollars there but not one more cent. Ever.

I called my credit card company to complain about GameStop's policy as discover card discourage asking for ID if the back of the card is signed. They couldn't help.. I later find out GameStop employee has called my card in stolen because I would not provide my ID!!!!!!!!

You refused to show her ID? When one of my CCs was stolen it was used on all sorts of cheap stuff before they went for the big items. Presumably to check if the store did in fact look at the signature or ask for ID.

This is not a bad thing. It's used to cut down on fraud, and it is something that stores are allowed to do.

The employee was probably caring about their job. A lot of places have mandatory ID checks. And if you were driving youre nice new car,I assume you had license on you. i hate to say it but the faults on you,not the employee doing their job.

ha, that is great the cashier called the credit company. u should have just showed her ur ID. i've never been asked for my ID when used my credit card. i think it might be because it is a debt card and u need the pin to get it used.

If you drove there you should have had your driver's license on you, so I don't see what the big deal is. A signature on a back of a card really isn't that good of proof, signatures are easy to forge.

It's standard policy these days to need ID when they ask for your credit card. Seems like you were making a big fuss when you could have just said "okay", handed her your driver's license, and be done with it.

As an employee of gamestop I can tell you that we are not all incompetant fools. That particular girl might be stupid but she doesn't represent all of our companies employees. It's not like the minute you become a gamestop employee, you lose all of your brain power. The title should be gamestop employee... complete incompatence.

No. No she wasn't. For you to say so leads me to question your own competence as a retail employee.

Meh, I've been ID'd for Pepsi, J20 and Silly String before. It's no biggie just show it them. Making a fuss just screams "Of course I'm old enough/this person. Now watch me throw a tantrum".

Stores that accept Visa and Mastercard are not to ask to see ID if the back of the card is signed. It's in their merchant agreements. Discover may or may not be the same, I only know Visa and Mastercard's stance. That being said, most stores don't inform their employees of this. I'm sure most managers are unaware of it too.

i think this topic should be

"I was a unbelievably incompetent customer"

or perhaps

"Gamestop.. unbelievable competence"

seriously dude.. you fail. getting mad at someone because they are doing their job.
AND your actions were a bit suspicious.. you were in a rush, you didnt care about the item you were trying to buy,and then you try and pay with a credit card without ID... right... good on this gametop girl! she did the correct thing. I hope it takes you a lot of trouble to get a new credit card since your old one was 'stolen'

just thought id comment on this real quick..

Visa and Mastercard may not REQUIRE to show ID if the card is signed, but that doesnt mean the company selling the merchandise has the same policy. if its a companys policy to check ID on all credit card transactions, they have that right.. to protect themselves and their customers from fraud. As its been said, sigs are too easily forged. people need to stop being so stuck up and just show their damn id.

Hm...Does it vary? I've bought some fast food without the need of an ID and only used the credit card. I suppose it depends on what you're buying and how much.

its actually not. if they have a signature on their card, majority wise companies would be ok with that. Ive worked at numerous retail stores and you only require ID if they dont have the back signed. Anyway...who cares? Show them your id, my lord.

Sounds pretty incompetent to me. They should have said, "Sir, our store policy requires me to check your ID, but I would rather be a competent worker and let you buy it anyways. I will ignore the company policies just this once, only for you, because you are just that good of a guy."

They have to do that :| Some people don't sign the back of their cards, its more incompetent for a cashier to sell something without even realizing the back of the card isn't signed than not comparing signatures. Besides that, I've always had my ID checked when purchasing things with a credit card.

They're not to ever ask for ID per their agreement with Visa and Mastercard, despite store policy, if the back is signed. If they do not want to follow that policy then they aren't supposed to accept those cards. The agreement only pertains to those cards. As I said, Discovery may not require that. If the card is stolen then Visa and Mastercard are there to protect the customer.

Stores can get into trouble for requiring such. I've heard of Visa laying the smackdown on stores for doing so, it is a contract agreement. Same goes for having minimum and maximum charges.

I myself write "Check ID" on the back of my cards, though people rarely check signatures.

So you're one of those people huh? I bet you would've raised so much hell if your discover was stolen, used and you would be in their face asking them why they didn't do exactly what they've done to you to prevent fraud on your account. I find this to be very pointless and getting upset for nothing. Get over yourself, give them your ID and make the job easier for crying out loud!
