So I have about 5000 american dollars to buy a car with. It would be for driving to a from school 3 times a week (35 miles each way) plus work.

I don't really know what companies are good or bad, but so far I've been looking at honda's, nissan's, and pontiac (grand prixs, I really like them).

How reliable is a Grand prix? what are some good cars or just some general recommendations for a car. Thanks.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT BUY A PONTIAC GRAND PRIX or GRAND AM -they are some of the least reliable, worst cars ever made -I worked in a car shop for 6 years (all through college) -every one that came in with one of those cars and anyone we knew with one of those cars had SEVERE problems (colling system, electrical, alternator, etc) -just look up some consumer reports on them My advice: get a used Honda or Toyota -they are the most reliable and easy to fix -Almost every mechanis I have ever worked with/talked to agrees with this -they may not be the best looking/flashiest -but they are good, reliable cars...perfect for your situation And no I am not biased against American (I drive a Mustang) but I do have experience fixing Pontiacs (my gf has a 1997 grand prix)

Yeah my friend's grand prix went out within a year of ownership (I still like em though :P ). I forgot to add that I'm most likely going through a car auction (my brother is good friends with a mechanic/used car dealer where he got his car from) so I can probably get the car at a good price, do you have experience with those?. What about transmission type, I really like manuals but do they break faster?

1. just be careful at auction: -Many people get "swept up" and either feel like they have to buy something or get into a bidding war...aka a **** contest -sometimes you get a good deal, sometimes not, probably not like what you think, also watch out for researves 2. transmission depends on how you drive -some people are very hard on manual trans. = race, just learning, etc. = go through clutch quickly 3. post below YES NISSAN is also good

US automakers are making more reliable cars now, but not in your price range (sorry). I would stick to a Honda Civic, it has an excellent reputation for reliability. From a personal standpoint, my father drove one for near 10 years and put around 200,000+ miles on it. When he sold it all he needed to do was add oil some oil now and again.

Something practical, I mean I'd really like a jeep but I haven't much use for one. Coupes are nice but sedans are just easier, probably just a sedan with a 4 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission really with good mpg

That's not what I'd really want but alas I need to consider price and practicality...I mean if I could could, I'd get a coupe with a 6cyl engine and a manual transmission. I mean my brother drives an 87 jaguar, now that is boring. In all honesty price wise and mpg as well as cost of maintainence (sp?) what would be the best bet?

I could most likely trade off on the driving with other people or go to the other campus for certain classes which is less than half the distance (10 miles) Ok so I did some looking around and found some good pricings on a couple of mazdas and mitsubishis along with a volkswagen jetta and a few nissans. I could get a really great deal on a mitsubishi eclipse gs (2000) it has about 80,000 miles on it and is in great condition. Now I'm not out to get one of those sportier cars but it is a pretty good deal, is it a good car? what about their Galant ES model (2002)? Or a 2000 Nissan altima GXE? Sorry I just don't know too much about cars all I know is the mileage isn't too high and I can probably get the prices down 400-500 bucks so I could get a good deal.

Any japanese car. If you want something that is comfy to drive, then maybe a Lexus IS200(previous model), or a Toyota or Honda Civic. Hyundai Coupe, Toyota Celica, are very good cars too.

Cars are no longer viable technology. I'd wait and invest your money into something that will be self sufficent. Automobiles are now primitive technology no longer worth investing in.

I would recommend a Nissan 240SX if you want something practical and sporty, the engines are bulletproof, mine is at 185K miles and still running strong. Plus the rear seats are barely functional, so if you're hanging out with friends you can say "We don't fit in my car so someone else has to be DD" :D

Pontiacs are horribly unreliable. My dad had a Bonneville and had nothing but issues with it once it reached 75k miles.

Go with a Honda. They're reliable, safe, fuel efficient, reasonably priced cars. I have an '02 Accord that I bought new. I've put nearly 100k miles on it over 7 years, and it's required nothing but routine maintanence. It also gets around 30mpg and uses regular gas.

1998 honda civic ex coupe w/ 90,000 miles on it for $3000 I could probably get it for 2700 and use the rest for new tires and probably good speakers? eh sound decent?

Alright, one last thing. 500 dollars more for the same civic except with 8000 miles less and a 5spd manual transmission, only thing is it looks like the cars audio system is stripped out. Which would you go for? The civic is really small I'm used to driving a jaguar so I hope it's not that small

Get the more expensive one. Trust me, 8,000 miles makes a difference. Civics are sturdy, but it's better to get one that will last you a while longer if you're gonna be putting it to that kinda work. :)

The only reason I considered it is because the one with more miles is 500 dollars cheaper actually has an audio system in it (the other one doesn't even have speakers). Then again the more expensive one does have a manual transmission...my dad doesn't want me to buy it because he thinks the clutch will need replacing often (coming from a man who's had challengers, firebirds, and nissan Zs no less). I'd be doing a lot more city driving if it changes anything, the only time I'll be on the highway is to go to school or if I'm going out for a party or the beach. On mondays I go down to a miami pub which is about 30 miles away, I'd like to save gas on that (I really don't know why I'm telling you my schedule but it's just how I'll be driving).
