Just wondering if anyones got some suggestions on how to get out of this situation. Basically a friend of mine(call him friend X) advertised a job with his company; to learn about the job you have to RSVP with him for a group session where they provide some information and collect resumes. Another friend of mine(call him friend Y) is currently out of work and needs a job pretty bad so he RSVPs. Friend Y then convinces me to join him in the session because he is insecure or something, I'm not really sure. In any case, I contact friend X and RSVP as well.

Now get this, just a couple of mins ago friend Y calls me up and tells me he is going to bail on the session, just doesn't feel like doing it for some reason. The thing is the group interview is TOMORROW at 11 in the morning. It is much too late for me to contact friend X and officially let him know I'm not going to be there. I don't want to just not show up since that would be incredibly rude and friend X is a good friend of mine, I don't want to get him in trouble.

I didn't even want this job, I was simply doing it to help support friend Y and suddenly I might be stuck going to it solo and wasting a couple of hours of my time. Anyone have any suggestions on avoiding this?

PS. for those curious, friend Y is simply going to not show up even though he RSVP; he isn't as tight with friend X as me so I guess he doesn't feel that kind of guilt.

Just call your friend or email him/her if you are opposed to going.

Email him then - say you have to take care of something personal. He will read the email in the morning.

Uhh its highly unusual to bring friends with you too your interview. And kinda lowers the chances of getting a job.

Anyway gettting out of an interview is easy. Just don't show up.

Well its not an interview where your grilled on your merits or what not. Its more like an information session. As my friend explained it, things are done in a group and basically they do a presentation explaining the tasks involved with the position and then they'll collect resumes from anyone who is still interested.

Yea, the email is probably the best bet, I still feel guilty about it but its better than just not showing up especially since i already RSVP.

Call him (better than email) and just apologise and tell him after some thought it's not the kind of direction you want to take your career. Better to let him know sooner rather than later. No harm done – if he needs you to make up numbers then do the honorable thing and pop along…

Give him a call during business hours, or call his office number to leave a message. I don't think its that big of a deal given this is just an information session. But make sure you do contact him in one way or another though as a courtesy

Is this 'business meeting' for Amway? It's a pyramid scheme, they're used to people ditching out. You' ll have to be stern with friend X that you're not interested though otherwise they'll keep calling and inviting you even saying it's just for coffee and such

Do you want the job? No. Then don't show up. You win, you got the outcome you wanted.

What if the job WAS for a ninja? He wouldn't last 5 seconds in the room. In fact, he wouldn't even make it to the room. He would be dead by time he pulls into the parking lot. Go as a pirate. Problem solved.
