Giant red penguins!

We all know how excellent penguins are, but it turns out there was something even cooler swimming the seas millions of years ago:

This is the sort of story that puts a smile on my face. What does OT make of this (in the slim hope that an article about giant red penguins can sustain a discussion and not get buried by the next girl help/virginity/who's your favourite poster thread)?

How the hell did they figure out the thing was red? Yes I read the article, yada yada, melonosomes, yada yada. If they could figure out so much by these cells why don't we know more about how dinosaurs looked? Don't they have melonosomes? They ARE close relatives.

I don't see why not. I can see them now, fighting pitched battles with ticks and mites for the rights to scavenge on dead skin cells. We probably won't be seeing fossil evidence anytime soon, though.
