enelope Soto, a Florida woman, was jailed on Monday after flipping off a judge during her court hearing, CBS Miami reports.

Soto, 18, appeared in bond court for a drug possession hearing and laughed when the judge asked her if she was under the influence.

The judge told Soto, "We're not in a club, be serious about it." Soto said she was being serious.

He initially ordered Soto to be held on $5,000 bond, to which Soto laughed again and said, "Adios."

The judge summoned her back to the podium and increased her bond to $10,000. At that point, Soto stopped laughing.

"Are you serious?" Soto asked.

The judge replied, "I am serious. Adios."

Soto flipped him off and blurted an expletive as she walked away. The judge then ordered her held in contempt of court and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

That was sh!tty. He said a singsong "bye bye." She returned it with a cheerful "adios." And he doubles her bail? She should have been pissed. Shouldn't have called him a motherf*cker, but still.

Girl was obviously on something and "adios" wasn't said in a sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful tone. Unreasonable.

No, doofus, that's called anarchy. "Freedom of speech" means the government can't send the Black Shirts out to make you disappear in the middle of the night for comparing George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. It doesn't mean you get away scott free after telling the person who decides you immediate fate to go f*ck himself.

Why am I not surprised a bratty 18-year old is openly disrespecting an authority figure? It seems like some kids look at it as a badge of honor now. Yes, some authority figures may be douches but that wasn't the case here. In most, if not all courts in the US the judge asks defendants if they are under the influence as procedure. Also, no, contempt of court is not a violation of your First Amendment rights just like getting arrested for yelling bomb on a plane or fire in a crowded theater when there really isn't a bomb or fire isn't a violation of the First Amendment either.

The judge is yet another tiny, pathetic man who couldn't stand the fact that this broad wasn't taking him or his courtroom seriously. He just wanted to throw his weight around because he could. Though relatively minor, this is a clear abuse of power by a man who couldn't stand that she saw him for what he was- a worthless little nothing.

There is a difference between forgetting to say "Sir" or "Your Honor" once or twice and outright flipping off the man who will decide how much slimmer your wallet will be and your freedom. You gotta use some common sense instead of hoping your actions turn you into some viral anti-hero among a bunch of anti-establishment teens and college age kids who in the end will put you on a pedestal but aren't going to pay your bail or get you a decent job when you get out.

The increase in fee is because she said "adios" in a dismissive manner. His feelings were hurt, and he wanted to throw around his authority because he could. The only reason he raised her fee was becauses he made him angry. He's using his power from the bench to satiate his ego. That is an abuse of power, sorry.

I wonder if something happened before the adiós, because doubling her bail just for that seems a bit excessive. But the flipping off and cursing of the judge after that definitely fits into contempt of court. She kinda deserved that one.

Allowing people to openly disrespect you undermines your authority, which makes you less effective. That applies in almost any profession you are in. For a military commander that could mean people disobey your orders in a critical combat situation, for a teacher that could mean a student won't give you the chance to teach because they can get away with being loud and disrupting the class, and for a judge that could mean your time on the bench will be looked at as a joke, leading to your eventual dismissal. Everything isn't going to be in black and white.

It's a perfectly legitimate reason. I bet you join the Syntagma protests often and cause a riot. Or was against the perfectly rational decision to finally clean what is the lazy a**'s edition of a higher educational system. You honestly make no sense and completely come off as a hooligan.

Honestly, both of them were acting like idiots. The judge clearly was butthurt. Her "adios" was a direct response to his "bye bye" comment; the judge could and should have ignored the "adios" and addressed the next person in line. Still, her attitude before the "bye bye" comment was really sh!tty.

Her having a sh*tty attitude is no justification to use his legal authority (which in reality is institutionalized violence) to sate his ego. It's a pathetic display, and anyone who sides with the judge is a capitulant sh*theel.

Not that I'd care if someone on the internet thinks I am capitulant sh!theel, but I'm certainly not siding with him. He was wrong to increase the bond. The word "adios" doesn't warrant that whatsoever. But her sh!tty attitude was annoying as well.

Yeah,pretty much this.

"Justice".in our world,is bullsh*t,really.

BS! it's hypocritical,arrogant,and stupid.

In a better world, punshiment wouldn't be based on laws.

It'd be based on JUSTICE,true justice.

Are they a nice person? do they deserve it? stuff like that.

Also, everyone would go through often psychological tests, and if you were stupid/mean,you can't have kids, and you get locked up forever.

Thank you,thank you,thank you.

It was a drug case anyway, and we all know the war on drugs is absolute bullsh*t and a complete waste of time and resources.

If she wants to take xanax, it's her body, so whatever. Shouldn't the justice system be more concerned with locking up real criminals, like rapists and murderers? Oh wait, that would require actual work, and if they only locked up real criminals, their conviction rates wouldn't be nearly as high.

So you are perfectly OK with a judge using arbitrary powers over people's lives when they feel disrespected? Some pathetic old man has a laughably thin skin, and he should be able to use his legal authority to sate his ego? A man who is so sad that he lets some 18 year old girl get under his skin should be able to use the force of law to make himself feel better. You're OK with that? Well, you're quite the bootlicker. You'll go far working for the government or some corporation.

Not that I'd care if someone on the internet thinks I am capitulant sh!theel, but I'm certainly not siding with him. He was wrong to increase the bond. The word "adios" doesn't warrant that whatsoever. But her sh!tty attitude was annoying as well.

I'm not talking about you, you're a pretty good poster for the most part.

[QUOTE="Rhazakna"]She was in contempt because of a pathetic little man who abused his power. Someone who says disrespectful things goes to jail, someone who abuses their power not only stays free, but still has legal authority over people's lives. The "justice" system, ladies and gentlemen!GreekGameManiac

"Justice" is a philosophically bankrupt concept. All "justice" consists of is an emotional salve for enough of society to feel as though order has been restored after a "bad" act has been committed. There is no such thing as justice, only actions and reactions.

1. Dumb little girl should keep her mouth shut and claim poverty

2. Power tripping judge, heartless and cruel, raise someone's bail over "Adios"

[QUOTE="Rhazakna"][QUOTE="ad1x2"] There is a difference between forgetting to say "Sir" or "Your Honor" once or twice and outright flipping off the man who will decide how much slimmer your wallet will be and your freedom. You gotta use some common sense instead of hoping your actions turn you into some viral anti-hero among a bunch of anti-establishment teens and college age kids who in the end will put you on a pedestal but aren't going to pay your bail or get you a decent job when you get out.ad1x2
The increase in fee is because she said "adios" in a dismissive manner. His feelings were hurt, and he wanted to throw around his authority because he could. The only reason he raised her fee was becauses he made him angry. He's using his power from the bench to satiate his ego. That is an abuse of power, sorry.

So, what would you do if you was the judge and was openly disrespected in your court room by some kid who wasn't even born yet when you finished law school?Let it happen so the next defendant can tell you to kiss your ass because he heard about how you let an 18-year old brat get away with disrespecting you? If anything, she is an idiot. She is trying to gain her freedom, she cold have talked sh!t after she left instead of trying to prove a point. If I talked to my mom like that when I was a kid I would have got slapped on the spot.

The thing is: the girl said "adios" and he didn't like the way she said it, so he retaliated through his position. It's not like she cussed him out.

Her bail was increased because she sarcastically told the judge adios, which anybody who isn't anti-authority could see was disrespectful. She was put behind bars because she told the judge fvck you and flipped him off. You can be as anti-authority as you want but that isn't the way things work in a court room. It is her fault she got arrested in the first place and it is her fault she decided to be a disrespectful little b!tch and think she can walk out without any penalty. If she felt she was disrespected by the judge she could have filed a complaint instead of flipping off the judge. If you don't like it run for office and try to push for legislation to defang judges. Then watch how fast the real criminals, not just the petty ones like her start to take full advantage.
