Im sure you've heard by now about the teen sailor whose gone missing somewhere in the ocean, and her family is trying desperately to find her. Honestly, I cant say I feel sorry for her. She brought this on herself, her family will defend her calling her a hero and a brave soul, but deep down they know what she was doing was downright ridiculous. As I write this they are preparing a rescue effort, valuable tax payers money going to waste in search of someone who thought it would be a good idea to break a record. Thoughts? http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/06/10/teen-sailor-missing-at-sea/

What were the parents thinking? This wasn't the girl's fault, it was her so called parent's fault.

There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, and it seems like she may have crossed it. Either way, I do feel bad for her. As with most troubled kids these days, I blame the parents.

What is wrong with you guys? Yes, she did something stupid but yes I feel bad for her if something bad has happened. I do not wish for death on anyone, no matter how foolish they could be.

dumbass parents, and i cant say anything about the girl other than her sailing alone is really retardedly stupid cuz we dont know wtf happened... they should look for her for like max a week or so and then give up if they want, but i dont think they should waste that money, no, infact... why dont the parents pay for the search?

Yeah that one wasn't smart by any measure.

I don't feel sorry for that. Some people can do great things and probably complete that journey at a young age, others can't. She couldn't.

It's a bad situation, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

So 'we' no longer feel sorry for people that do things that could be dangerous -someone that has a mountain climbing accident -someone that gets hurt playing football -someone driving a race car -etc. Her parents should not have allowed this, but that does not change the fact that a life was (probably) lost, and a family has lost a daughter

No one here is wishing death onto her. Most have accepted that she is already dead. This is not something you can really feel bad about. She stood up, got on a boat, and set sail on her own to break a world record. Now, most chances are she is gone. Sailing around the world alone has a higher probability of death than success. Anyone who has done it would agree, even when they have 1000x more money to put into safeguards than this girl and her parents.

That's true. Even though we can sit here and blame them all we want, I'm sure they're beating themselves up twice as hard. I can't imagine the grief.

Yea well from the comments ive been reading on CNN, ABC, and Yahoo the majority of people dont have an ounce of sympathy towards her. Im sure the Media will play this up and Obama will give a speech, but goddamn, this whole thing nowadays where everyone is special and can achieve whatever they want is just insane to me. Someone at some point should have pulled her aside and talked with her, something her parents obviously did not do.

I don't know about you guys, but if I chose to go sailing alone, I would make DAMN sure there was some way you could locate me. We live in a pretty advanced age, I'm sure theres some kind of device or doohickey that you can at least carry with you or on you that can tell people where you are.

In the middle of the open ocean the time she got off a distress call she could have already be gone. Go in the middle of the great lakes. The waters are violent at times. The boat can be considered a makeshift raft compared to the technology used by the rich folks who have achieved this. They should have gone with her, if she had to go, but she wanted to do it alone. So with high chance that it happened, she died alone.

I feel bad for her, but what were the parents thinking? Letting her doing this alone and not having a way to locate her if something like this happens.

Well it was the parents themselves that didn't want to do this but the entire country backed the girl saying it was her legal rights bla bla bla, so its not the parents idea, they didnt want it to happen in the first place
