Bram Stoker's "Dracula." For 111 years old it is still very well-written and enthralling.

Edit: Also, Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves.

"A Clockwork Orange" is a fantastic novel and yet is criminally short. But when a story is brought down by redundancies it is a detriment to the experience.

The Harry Potter series. I read 1 through 6. Good stuff. The Golden Compass wasn't bad. Kinda boring sometimes, though.

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The book is filled with symbolism and themes, but the book is really easy to understand.

Maximum Ride by James Patterson
A group of bird/human kids are running away from scientists from a location called The School. The book is filled with action.

The Finishing School by Michelle Martinez
The book is about a mystery on a huge drug smuggle. At the end, I had no clue that the person who did it was right under my nose.

Meh... there is better literature out there worth reading. Sure, it's an English/Lit teachers dream come true with all that hidden symbolism but it's a boring book.

I'd recommend someone read many other books before they waste time with Catcher.

Get the "Song of Ice & Fire" books. Amazing story.

Also, The Bourne trilogy.

If you're into literature, Oryx & Crake is about as good as you can do.

To get the obvious out of the way; Dune, LOTR, The Silmarillion, 1984, War of the Worlds, Battlefield Earth, etc

-Take a look at SW:Shatterpoint, and SW:Traitor.

-Every book written by Alastair Reynolds I've read has been amazing.

I used "crib notes" if you will. A page with all the direct "translations" printed off and I cross referenced while I read. After reading the novel I got to be very good at both writing and speaking in Nadsat... unfortunately that talent dissipated quickly with no real use for it.

Great book. I prefer 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles' and 'Dance, Dance, Dance', but NW is probably my 3rd or 4th favourite of his. Solid stuff.

A Clockwork Orange isn't about the story so much as it is a statement upon morality, but I absolutely agree that it's criminally short.

I really love The Lord of the Rings and Trainspotting. Notes From Underground is really funny, but really just cool also. I also appreciate For Whom the Bell Tolls quite a lot, and No Country For Old Men was an interesting way of saying 'you damn kids, get off my lawn'.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest
Trainspotting
Fight Club
A Clockwork Orange.

I realise they're all movies, but the novels are superior.

Next by Crichton
The Last Juror by Grisham
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Eye of the Storm by Jack Higgins
Rising Sun by Crichton

Atlas Shrugged is very long. If you just want something to last a couple days I'd go with Rising Sun or The Last Juror. I thought both were excellent.

The sword of Truth Series...i just started reading this good fantasy story. the Twilight Series...it is one of the best series ever. Anthem by Ayn Rand is a scary vision of the future. 1984 is great because it does a good job of showing you the future. Eragon and Eldest and Brisingr are good fantasy books. Duma Key by Stephen King is also really good if you want a mystery with some horror thrown in. Also one called Deaths Head is a futuristic military book by David Gunn...beware though because it has a lot of naughty language and content.

Well, it goes like this. The first book is freaking awesome. I'd recommend it to anyone. The second devolves a bit into... gore and unnecessary gore at that. The third is just stupid with its descriptions (of gore). The 4th book gets a little better again, but it's kind of stupid and confusing and you just wish that he would've made the "trials and tribulations" shorter. 5th book is relatively lame. I really liked the 6th book a lot. After that, I stopped. It just really goes downhill. He never captures the magnificence of the first book again. Though the second book does get close.

Last Exit to Brooklyn is a horrific, yet brilliant read. Although I understand it is hard to get hold of in some parts of the world.

Animal Farm is a classic, and is in some ways superior to 1984.

And lastly The Breakfast of Champions is a great book.

All of those books mentioned are good. To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is one of my favourite books of all time. The Hobbit by Tolkien is amazing as well, and I would go as far to say it is much better than the LOTR.

Dan Brown's 'Davinci Code' and 'Angels and Daemons'.

Inheritance Triology.

Harry Potter Series.

Some stories written by Isaac Asimov. Has anyone read the 'Last Question'?
