so my mother wants me to pick a singlechristmas gift fairly soon and shot down my request for a PSP Go due to the price. so i'm thinking of asking for some nice over the ear headphones with as exelent of sound quality as i can get. also should hold up to frequent use and some wear and tear without blowing a speaker like the rest in my headphone graveyard. thanks in advance

PS: $150 absolute max buget

Get some skullcandy headphones if you want to listen to them on the go or for music making cause you can get loads of types of headphones from them.

STOP RECOMMENDING BAD PHONES! Now that we got through, I ask the OP: what kind of music will you be listening to the most, what equipment will you be plugging them into, and is sound isolation important (mostly not letting the headphones sound out)?

i listen mostly to rock/metal songs, will be mostly for my Zune, but will use on PSP and computer from time to time. sound isolation isen't paramount but it is a feature i would like (both keeping background noise out and music in)

If you're willing to sacrifice isolation, I suggest getting one of the cheaper Grados (SR80 or SR125). They barely isolate, but sound really good with guitars. If not, gie the Denon AHD1001 or the Audio Technica ATHES7 (the user DivergeUnify has one of those, he can go into more detail about them than I can) a try.

I find these three models to have a good compromise between sound quality and portability, with their over the ear but not too bulky design. If you have any further questions just ask.

As an owner of the Grado SR225i (although the SR225i are $200 retail, I got mine for $145. I think the SR125i are $150 are retail value), I would say that in terms of isolation you may as well not be wearing any headphones at all given how much noise is let in.

Sound leakage is also pretty bad (at the second to lowest volume setting on my laptop, people can still hear what I'm playing from about 5-15 feet away (depending upon the song) in a quiet setting like the library).

They're also not very portable with their thick and fairly lengthy cables.

You need to buy a 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm (standard size found on most headphone outputs) adapter.

However, given all of those negative points, I'd still highly recommend that you at least try out some Grados. I am in love with their sound presentation (very forward), the way guitars sound (especially when overdriven), and the impact of drums.

With that much money, you could check out Sennheisers or Shure headphones.

Enlightened you are padwan I see neon is already here... I'ld stay away from Grados, they're very open so unless you're playing in your room when everyone's out you're gonna have issues. Airguitarist may have the ES7s, i know he has a few Audio Technica pairs. I'ld look at Ultrasones, not sure how much they go for over in the US but they're all on ear and foldable and they have cans for every price bracket also over here in the UK you can get some great deals on them.

Very good. I think the Denon HD 1001ks are supposed to sound better, but the ES7 are more portable, and come retail very uncomfortable, and you have to bend the frame to make it fit your head( absolutely neccessary), but once the frame fits, it feels pretty comfortable and you can go about 2-3 hours with no problem plus, they look hawter than Skull Candy

Well it depends on your price range really. If you want a really expensive but really nice set. Triton makes a 5.1 surround sound headset with like 3 speakers in each ear, and it works really nice too. For mid ranged stuff I'd go with a headset from creative, they have a nice quality and feel durable, though sometimes they are a bit overpriced. For cheapo crap I'd say plantronics or even radioshack maybe, but I tend to go for the nicer stuff so I wouldn't really know.

No not really. Triton has a headphone set up where each ear has 3 speakers each, so essentially you can get as good of a surround sound experience. The downside is the set I looked at is grossly expensive, and pretty big for headphones, but if you like 5.1and privacy, it's probably the only set I would recommend.

Edit: oh there's also no subwoofer support in them either so if you like the room to vibrate you're on your own.

They're actually one of the best "cheap" brands out there. The ones I had were nice, had great sound, and lasted for around 8 months (earbuds; that's a long time for me and for under $10 it was well worth it). Whatever you do don't get apple headphones. Those are poorly designed, have a soundguard, and have some of the worst sound quality out there. If you're going to spend close to $150 go for something nice...check out the other options people posted.

EDIT: Damn glitchspot. :x

I know that Triton and several other "5.1 surround" headphones - gimmicky snake oil targeted at uninformed gamers. No point having a 5.1 system that close to your head, two speakers from a good pair of headphones can give a real sense of surround. This is especially true for FPS games. Even a Sennheiser HD515 has better imaging and soundstage than "5.1 surround headphones", with the added bonus of having reasonable SQ for music listening. 5.1 spread across several separate, well placed speakers in a room is good, 5.1 strapped to your head is not.

Neon recommended me a pair of Sennheiser HD 25-1 II a while ago, They cost about $220 retail but I bought a brand new pair on Ebay for $108, sound quality is fantastic, sound isolation is great, they are not flimsy at all, each part on them can be individually replaced. Just overall one of the best headphones I have ever used. Also please for do not buy Bose or SkullCandy, those suck (a lot of people are misinformed about those).

TC if you're willing to chip-in $20-50 of your own money you might want to check out some IEMs as well. I've found they provide the best combination of sound quality, portability and isolation for the money, and there are some top-notch pairs at ~$170 like the Jays q-Jays, Etymotic ER4s and Sleek Audio SA6s.
