Google Approved to Buy, Sell Energy
Will you soon be able to buy your power from Google? The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Thursday approved Google's application to buy and sell energy. Google filed an application for market-based rate authority on December 23 under the name Google Energy. Google Energy is a subsidiary of the company, which "was formed to identify and develop opportunities to contain and manage the cost of energy for Google," according to FERC. "Google Energy states that it intends to act as a power marketer, purchasing electricity and reselling it to wholesale customers." Given that it's wholesale, don't expect to swap in that Con Edison bill for a Google bill anytime soon. The move is viewed as a means for Google buyrenewable energy in its own markets, and the FERC application approval notes that "neither Google Energy nor its affiliates own or control any generation or transmission, nor do they have a franchised service area for the sale of electricity to captive customers." Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In October, Google announced that Energy Inc. will be the first device partner for PowerMeter, which monitors electricity consumption in real time and offers feedback on how to reduce consumption. The tool, which was first announced in February 2009, lives as a secure widget on iGoogle, communicates with smart meters. LINK
