LAVACA COUNTY, Texas -- A 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed in a hunting accident by his grandfather, investigators said.

According to the Lavaca County Sheriff's Office, Taylor Michalec's grandfather said he was walking behind the teen when the trigger on his AK-47 assault rifle snagged a branch and discharged, striking the teen in the back. The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon near County Road 290, about five miles west of Moulton, Texas, about 100 miles east of San Antonio.

Maybe automatic weapons aren't the best thing when it comes to hunting.

Owned.

Yeah, nothing says hunting like an automatic rifle. Why wasn't the safety on, either? Guy must have had a screw loose if he thought it was a good idea to walk behind his grandson like that.

I can only imagine the conversation he'd have with his son/daughter after returning from the trip: "Oops."

I dont know why you'd use an assault rifle to hunt, it just seems inefficient. I just get the feeling any animal you shot would be blown to oblivion, and there would be nothing usable left.. that, and isnt an AK-47 an automatic rifle? I was under the impression only semi-automatics are legal.. could be wrong..

Either way, if he had the safety on this wouldnt have happened. However, mistakes happen, and that family has my condolences and my sympathy.

Yeah well you must have your screws loose to say a 14 year old boy was "Owned" in a tragic accident. You are indeed, sick.

Is owning a AK 47 even legal? Man that sucks. I don't know if the grandfather can live with himself after that.

I know you are. You can look at these things and laugh when your behind the comfort of your computer staring at your level 53 gamespot account. Funny how things happen to innocent kids, instead of jackass waste of life like you.dday2121

It may be wrong to derive pleasure and amusement from the misfortunes of others, but part of the wonder of the internet is that I can create a nice little bubble for myself and endlessly mock life's tragedies without sinking too deep into psychopath territory.

Either way, I didn't mean 'owned' the way you seem to think I did, since an old guy corking a kid with a slug in the back isn't all that funny, especially since he's probably vomited himself dry with guilt since it happened. Dude basically ruined his entire family in about half a second, although I will concede he wasn't thinking straight at the time and it was bound to happen.

Would be most just if he shot himself instead.

Thats quiet a "grand" death.

OK, that was terrible, but what the hell was Grandfather doing hunting with an AK? And it shouldn't have been pointing at his son in the first place. IMO, that grandfather was an idiot.

Not all AK-47's are fully automatic killing machines everyone has the impression they are. In some states in the US owning a Semi Automatic version of the Ak-47 is perfectly legal, these versions are made by several manufactures and are very popular. So hunting with one isnt all that unreasonable and isnt illegal

Firs thing first, they weren't using an automatic. Just because it's an AK doesn't mean it's fully automatic-there's really no difference between it and other semi auto hunting rifles. Other than the fact it looks 'scary'.

The grandfather obviously didn't have the safety on, which was his first mistake. The second being the grandfather was pointing the rifle at the kid...

I bet he feels horrible. A tragic accident that shouldn't of happened if they were using common safety measures.

I believe it'a legal to own AK-47s in some states, but is illegal to have them be capable of fully automatic fire. You can get it modified for that. Not too sure though.

I don't get the appeal of hunting with an assault rifle (automatic or otherwise). I mean, it's not very sporting when the animal's got nothing and you've got a military weapon...
