I'm doing an assignment about great minds, people who were recognized for their brilliance and how they used their intelligence to change the world

So far I got, Einstein, Aristotle, Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Alexander Grahambell and Stephan Hawking but the only women I can think of who made any sort of impact did things like fight for equality.

I need a list of women who were like geniuses and RECOGNIZED internationally for their brilliance

There won't be many because of the way that women weren't equal for such a long time. Just put someone like Mary Poppins in there.

You will find scientists, but not great minds on par with Einstein and even Tesla... :\ It's fact, - and I'm not sexist - but that's a mans' ball game.

O and they have a Brain a 5th the size of ours, It's science. :P

I appreaciate what you're doing for your gender and these women are certainly a part of history but they don't belong in my report, those women you mentioned made a flag and worked on a railroad, others were royalty or were the first foreign born first-lady.

I have to stress out I'm looking for women of brilliance.

I can't for the life of me remember her name but the chick that invented kevlar. I don't know about you but to the countless men and women who serve in the military and police forces all over the United States and over seas she has to be right up there.

I was watching some Stephen Hawking DVD and there were some brilliant women in that. But they aren't "recognized" for their work.

Whether it's washing dishes or unraveling the secrets of the universe...women just don't get credit for their hard work.

I do the dish washing in my house thank you very much. On the other hand I am single. On the first hand I would probably still do them if I weren't though. Is it possible to be whipped while your single?

That is a little off topic though. I found that ladies name Stephanie Kwolek.

I cant think of any female genius's. I dont even recall learning about any in school :|. Women had only recently received "equal" rights and "treatmeant" so not to many were out there changing the world in our past history, and most of the text books are just trying to reinforce this idea of male dominance. :(

If you're including Graham Bell and Eddison, I seeno reason why you shouldn't include Curie. All were inventors and discoverers in their own right... Graham Bell's and Eddison's discoveries are just more well known.

Hypatia is good... Elizabeth I is also known for being a briliant ruler and both ending the violence of the Protestant Reformation and allowing the Renaissance to flourish, which shows wisdom on her part. Ancient China also hadseveral notable poets and writers, but I don't know what kind of brilliance you are looking for.

Scientific brilliance? How about Ada Lovelace, a pioneering computer scientist?

I also agree with Marie Curie -- she was the first person to win 2 Nobel prizes!

Rosalind Franklin is also well known as helping discover the helical structure of DNA.

As to why there are not as many well known female scientists as men -- try reading about oppression and sexism. Kind of hard to become world renowed when you aren't allowed to enroll in university to study the relevant subjects until about 100 years ago...
