I would say The Bible. It has surely been the most influential piece of literature. It is also one of the most ancient and most widely available.

I don't know about the "greatest", but my favorite books are The Forever War (Joe Haldeman) and Into Thin Air (Jon Krakauer).

The Enuma Elish. The first major mythological text of Western civilisation that basically inspired all ideas of creation and monotheism throughout history and the development of modern religious thought (Marduk especially).

Favourite Non-Fiction Book - The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer

Favourite Fictional Book - Ummm, A Thousand Sons? I don't know. I only really read Warhammer 40K novels. I don't usually read Fiction.

Why? Until the 19th c. religion was a major aspect of public social life and integral in all the creative arts. If anything, religion should be a major focus-point of this topic. :P
