My summer has been spent enjoying many films, which led to the question 'Who is the greatest director, ever?'.

Of course you have Steven Spielberg who single-handily invented summer blockbusters with 'Jaws'. Not to mention some of his other crowning achievements, which help him be nominated for 6 Oscars with 2 wins(Schindler's List's+ Saving Private Ryan)

Then there are the 'underdogs' Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock. These guys consistently are/were given critical and commercial praise for their amazing feats in filmaking only to be snub (Until recently, 'The Departed') by the Academy. Goodfellas, arguably the best gangster flick, but Scorsese's best work loses to Kevin Cosrner's 'Dance's With Wolves'?

Do not forget James Cameron, the mind behind Terminator 1+2. And of course the most critically and commercially successful film EVER, Titanic.

Then the iconic western and bad cop turn director, Clint Eastwood. 4 nominations for best director, as well, for best pictures, with 2 wins in both catergories(Unforgiven+ Million Dollar Baby).

Last in this list, but not least; George Lucas. Two of the greatest trilogys ever made under his belt, as well as the second most commercially successful movie ever ... Star Wars (However; If tickets from 1971 were price to match tickets in 1997 Titanic's release year, SW would actually gross more).

I know I neglected greats such as Peter Jackson (LOTR Trilogy), Oliver Stone (Platoon), Francis Ford Coppala (Godfather I+II), among others. But the question is 'Who is the greatest director, ever?' .. why?

I can't pick one... so I'll give a selection.

Martin Scorsese - Self Explanatory

David Lynch - The king of weird, always artistic, yet an acquired taste.

David Fincher - Interesting films, always nice to watch.

Stanley Kurbick - 2001, Dr.Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, who can complain?

Alejandro González Iñárritu - Not too prolific, but shows real promise, I advise you check out Amores Perros.

Chan-wook Park. - Always artistic and intelligent.

Martin Scorsese - The Departed, Casino, Raging Bull and many other incredible movies.

George Lucas - The original Star Wars trilogy and the Indy trilogy are as good as movies get.

i've also watched a lot of classic movies over the somer. some of my very favorites are off the top of my headmartin scorsese, david fincher, mel gibson, akira k, peter jackson, scott ridely, pj anderson, quentin tarantino, alex rodrigas, spike lee, clint eastwood, cameron crowe, stanly kubrick, alferd hitchcock, francis ford copolla, frank darabont (though he hasn't made a great movie since the green mile, he's got insane talent), darren aranosky (though the fountain wasn't as good as i had hoped, pi was an amazing accomplishment and requiem is in my top 5 easily), orson welles.... i dunno i love all the directors i mentioned for specific reasons i've tried to figure out my favorite, but there are so many directors that i like. i would say all the directors i have mentioned are in that upper tier and could be considered the best (though some have proven more than others)

wow i forgot add him to my list! and just a question, i noticed a lot of people put fincher on their lists... while se7en and fight club were no doubt exceptional what did you guys think of zodiac? i think it's a really good movie, third best of the year imo (behind stardust and ratatoulie), but it really doesn't compare to se7en.

You just rated micheal bay above steven spielberg:| has micheal bay ever done a movie as good as Munich, schinlers list, Amistad, empire of the sun or jaws? no micheal bay directs commercials and cheesy over the top action movies, which are nowhere close to how good spielbergs movies are. I know its your opinion, but im just curious as to why you rate a hack like micheal bay above someone like spielberg:?

Goodfellas, arguably the best gangster flick, but Scorsese's best work loses to Kevin Cosrner's 'Dance's With Wolves'?

The best gangster flick is easily the Godfather, but in any event Scorsese's best is Mean Streets.

Then the iconic western and bad cop turn director, Clint Eastwood. 4 nominations for best director, as well, for best pictures, with 2 wins in both catergories(Unforgiven+ Million Dollar Baby).

Clint Eastwood is responsible for Dirty Harry. I will never forgive him for that.

Last in this list, but not least; George Lucas. Two of the greatest trilogys ever made under his belt, as well as the second most commercially successful movie ever ... Star Wars (However; If tickets from 1971 were price to match tickets in 1997 Titanic's release year, SW would actually gross more).

The new Star Wars was atrocious proving that George Lucas has lost his touch.

My personal favorite at this stage of my life is Stanley Kubrick. He is brilliant. I absolutely love Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a Clockwork Orange. And it's the way he made them that makes those movies so outstanding. He has a deliberate tone and draws out a lot of the stories to make the conflict itself all that more severe. Also among my favorites is Quentin Tarantino as he made Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, but we must acknowledge that he's not as good as he once was (as evidenced by the mediocrity of Hostel). My other favorite director is Martin Scorsese who made Taxi Driver.

Chris Nolan is great, it's just hard to put him in this catergory ... Granted everything he has touch has been amazing; Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, and of course Batman Begins. Mr. Nolan just isn't quite as prolific as the others in his masterpieces, not that one day he wouldn't easily fit into this converstation.

'Munich' was personally my favorite Spielberg movie. Michael Bay has definitely made some killer action titles; like my biggest guilty pleasure 'Bad Boys II' and this summers tour de force that was 'Transformers'.

It should be noted that GeorgeLucas didn't direct any of the Indiana Jones films. He was a writer, and I believe a producer. Spielberg directed all three and I believe he's the director for the upcoming installment.

Truly noted; however in the original releasing of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' George Lucas was listed under Co-director, though the next three were handled by Spielberg.

The absence of Ingmar Bergman in this thread is saddening. He needs more credit. He presents his philosophies on life beautifully in his films. His films remind me what art in the form of film looks like.
