Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas off of Leftoverture. Pretty much the only song you ever need to hear from them, but damn it is an awesome way to start an album.

Achilles' Last Stand of Led Zeppelin's album Presence.

Best track on the album and one of my favorite Zep songs.

Hmmm let me think...... The Prelude - Jay-Z The Dynasty Intro - Jay-Z A Million and One Questions - Jay-Z What We talkin bout - Jay-Z As far as hip-hop goes these are some of the top intros (all hip-hop heads should give them a listen especially The Dynasty intro and The Prelude).

I've always liked the intros done on albums by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Song of the Century..... BY FAR.

Man, when the lights when out, and this came blasting through the speakers, I got shivers. Everyone in the room got empowered with emotion and energy.

It also creates a great vibe just before you listen to the 17 track opera.

Edit: Thought the thread meant openings, not openers.

TC, I agree with a lot of those songs if not all of them. Good choices.

For me...

The Smashing Pumpkins-Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

The Smashing Pumpkins-To Shiela

Bjork- Earth Intruders

Pearl Jam-Once

Silversun Pickups- Melatonin

Those are the ones off the top of my head, to lazy to think of more.

I think the best one in my opinion and my personal favorite is "Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)" by Elton John from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. It just builds up the tention in the beginning and it starts to rock.

Wow, I cannot believe no one mentioned Muse yet. They have two of the best openers ever!

Anyways, heres some great openers:

Muse-Take a Bow (Black Holes and Revelations)

Muse-New Born (Origin of Symmetry)

Machine Head-Clenching the Fists of Dissent (The Blackening)

Nine Inch Nails-Mister Self Destruct (The Downward Spiral)

Metallica-Blackened (...And Justice For All)

Metallica-Battery (Master of Puppets)

Metallica-Fight Fire with Fire (Ride the Lightning)

Megadeth-Holy Wars...Punishment is Due (Rust in Piece)

Opeth-Ghost of Perdition (Ghost Reveries)

Avenged Sevenfold-The Beast and the Harlot (City of Evil)

I'll go with the obvious

Smells Like teen Spirit - Nevermind

Welcome To the Jungle- Appetite for Destruction

Just bombastic ways of starting an album.

some others:

New Day Rising- New Day Rising (Husker Du)

New Born- Origin of Symmetry

EDIT: and also In Between Days- Head On the Door (The Cure)
