Several songs come to mind, "Iron Man" for one, that thumping kick drum and that kind of rusted guitar sound set the atmosphere perfectly.

The brilliant downward spiral of a riff in the intro to "Master of Puppets" perfectly sets up the the climbing and falling momentum for the rest of the song, which gives the sensation of clawing your way out of a pit just to slip back down to the bottom before you can pull yourself out.

The intro to Mastodon's "Blood and Thunder" is quite possibly the catchiest riff since Thunderkiss '65. The opening to "Dry the River" by Maylene and the Sons of Disaster is the second catchiest.

Mine is a tie between "Bullet Ride" by In Flames (which is an amazing song, that nobody at my school seems to appreciate >.>) and "Citizen Erased" by Muse.
