I wrote this out of utter disguist of the Rolling Stones article. What a piece of junk. They had Elvis at #3 lol, but what really pissed me off was that they had Kurt Cobain above Donny Hathaway and LUTHER FRIGGIN VANDROSS. Now you might like Nirvana better than those artists, but you would have to be on drugs (no pun intended) to think that Kurt Cobain can sing better than Donny Hathaway and Luther Vandross even from a technical aspect. Here are the greatest recording artist (contemporary music)of all time imo.

1. Aretha Franklin

2. Luther Vandross

3. Stevie Wonder

4 Sam Cooke

5. Donnie Hathaway

6. Whitney Houstin

7. Jackie Wilson

8. Gladys Night

9. Michael Jackson

10 Donnie McClurkin

I really tried to make this list so that there wouldnt be those people who dont know about singing say "hey, all you have are black singers", but there were too many singers that started coming to mind that I couldnt do a "politcally correct" list. My mother is the greatest singer of all time imo, I just gotta give a shout out to her. But we all know that the music business is a crazy business, and just because you can sing doesnt mean that you will make it. And remember that there are people who cant sing that have made it!!!!!! The music business needs to be changed.

He's pretty good, but there are a lot of singers and if I had a top 50 I probably wouldve put them in it

No Elvis? I don't see what's so funny about him having such amazing vocal control and range. Creatively, he wasn't all too impressive, but vocally, he was a master.

Although there is a difference between a singer and a recording artist. The best singers are the ones best at using their instrument, whereas the best recording artists involve potential songwriting skills, ability with their instrument(s), and whatnot.

I disagree with a few entries on your list, but those are your opinions, so I can't really state otherwise. however, you wouldn't find Donnie McClurkin anywhere near my top 10

*hearts* Sam Cooke is one of my favorite artists as well. You have a pretty good list. Mine would be pretty similar (if were just talking about vocalists). Although, I'd have to put Minnie Riperton up there

Elvis couldnt even mess with Jackie Wilson, actually Jackie Wilson was the original Elvis, with even more range.

I didn't say Jackie Wilson doesn't deserve a high spot, or that Elvis deserves a top 3. Omitting Elvis and having someone like McClurkin take his spot would be just as radical as not placing someone like Sam Cooke on the list, though.

Elvis is better Donnie McClurklin??? Again, this isnt a politically correct list. Please learn... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuRTHluveKc especially at 2:12- 4:24. Also, have you heard "when sunday comes" by daryl coley (the original version). Download it, and then tell me if Elvis is even messing with Coley.

I'm sorry if you think I'm going to learn something from a duet where Donnie rarely sings on his one without Yolanda shadowing him. I know Donnie's stuff, my grandma is huge into his music(bought one of his live albums for her a few Christmases ago). He can sing very well, but top 10? Over Elvis? Come on. I don't even enjoy Elvis, he was a pompous idiot(well, he was smart enough not to fall for scientology) who didn't write his own material, but he's among the best natural singers of the past century. Daryl Coley has a great voice, but I wouldn't declare him top 10. Look, in the end, it's all opinion. Like I said in the first post.

Eh, it gets to the point (like any musical instrument) where youre technically proficient enough that it doesn't matter. It all comes down to taste

Example, Freddie Mercury and Pavarotti are 2 of the most world-renowned technical f*cking masters... but I dont really like either of them.

Some of the charm of singing is the imperfection. However, all of these singers would be useless without songwriters/songwriting skills. (Example, Elvis was an awesome singer... but if he didn't have those writers handing him material... he would have gone no where)

Im super biased towards the bands/artists who have songs I like... so I feel like Im unable to answer the question.

Although I love the sh*t out of Elvis.

The problem is that you're giving Rolling Stone magazine credibility. Greatest musician lists suck, and there is no point in making them.
