Star wars for me. It's tough though becuase Godfather I & II are about a million times better than other movie on this list combined but the 3rd is just so damn bad it hurts.
LOTR, not only because the movies were fantastic, but because it has books that back it up (I know Star Wars has books now too). The LOTR books essentially defined the high-fantasy genre as well.

Lord of the Rings. All 3 movies were great.
Star Wars. Ewoks ruined Return of the Jedi.
Godfather. Sophia Copolla ruins Godfather Part 3.
The Matrix. Part 3 ended poorly. 1 millon Mr Smiths yet all but one set out the final battle, really that's like a Dragon Ball anime, where they fight 1-on-1 for stupid reasons and don't get me started on the Sunshine thing at the end.
Of those choices, I liked LotR best.
If we're talking movie trilogies, "The Man With No Name" trilogy is my all time favorite:
A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Oh man. I love those movies! I didnt know that they were a trilogy though.
Also another good one would have been The Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz) but the last one isnt out yet
[QUOTE="Saturos3091"]Godfather had books to back it up. :| But did it's books define an entire genre? Don't think so. When it comes to defining what is the "greatest," I try to take all of a piece of media, including it's impact on culture/subculture, into account. Sure, quality matters, but when Star Wars, LOTR, and The Godfather are all really great trilogies, it's something like impact or relevance that'll make that difference in my opinion.LOTR, not only because the movies were fantastic, but because it has books that back it up (I know Star Wars has books now too). while i loved the the Lord of the Rings trilogy when i first watched it, they haven't aged well to me. it's hard for me to take it seriously- there i said it. i understand that the books are classics. i'm just talking about the movies which, to me, came across melodramatic.
godfather is my favorite movie and part II is my favorite sequel, but it's tough for me to definitively call the whole thing the best trilogy. i've loved people submitting man with no name as their favorite. i voted "other" without actually being sure what my real choice is.
