Thoughts?
In my opinion, they were a pretty kickass band, but their new albums suck.

I think they are quite good. Both their new and old albums are decent. American Idiot may have been a departure from their previous sound but as a concept album its solid.
Green Day is Pop Punk and they do it quite well. Sure some of their songs may be simple but that is what makes them catchy. I don't understand what everyone's problem with them is.
I really like them, I find their songs energetic and catchy most of the time (ignoring Boulevard and September). I don't think their new stuff sucks, but the quality of their songs has been decreasing over time.
Best songs: Basket Case, Walking Contradiction, Stuck With Me
I hate everything about them. They are super anti-American, and they wear frickin eye liner. :x

They are not Anti american. They just don't share the same political views as you.
"American Idiot" is about more than its name. Its not a hate America anthem.
Thealbum AmericanIdiot isabout a disenfranchised youth named Jesus Of Suburbiawho clashes with conservative American ideals. Of course you would hate it.
They do care about America and its direction. Their music is very politically motivated but its liberal.
Even though I don't care for the band musically, this is exactly my feelings towards them.I think they are quite good. Both their new and old albums are decent. American Idiot may have been a departure from their previous sound but as a concept album its solid.

America Idiot was about anyone not sharing their negative views of the country being an Idiot. Not sure what you call that. And there is still no excuse for the eye liner.[QUOTE="Pirate700"]

Yeah and that makes those who believe in those (generally quite patiotic also) an idiot. :roll:American Idiot wasn't about hating america. It was about a certain attitude that certain people in america have. Namely the conservative evangelical movement and certain negative aspects of the majority. Conservatives are not America.
I'd consider Green Day to be a patriotic band just with liberal views. that doesn't make them un american. As long as people like you are hating them I don't think anyone can say they are not a punk band. They are doing their job lol!

Ohright becauseliberals are "un american"right?
No them calling half the country idiots because they don't agree with them certainly makes the band stupid as all hell. How can you even take these losers seriously? They are grown men still wearing eyeliner and they are still pissed off at the world like a bunch of 16 year olds. They're a total joke and sell albums based off their extreme views.Actually I don't know if I'd consider Green Day to be "Pop Punk" They are not hardcore punk but when I think of "Pop Punk" I think of something like Blink 182 or something.
Green Day is odd.
I loved American Idiot, thought it was a fantastic CD. 21st Century is a solid follow up, though not nearly as impactful.

I don't really think that a band that critisizes neo cons is stupid. A band that defended them however...
I thought you were one of those Libertarian free market republicans. Don't worry they are not talking about you.
I took David Bowie seriousilly and look at how he dressed!

I want to remove my David Bowie comment. Green Day is awesome and all but they can't touch Bowie in terms of skill.

Great band, but their new album is missing the spark that their better stuff had. It hooks you at first, but it doesn't have the staying power some of their other stuff did. For example, the intro to East Nowhere Jesus is awesome, but the chorus is uninspired. Same with the "The Static Age," which starts out strong but then falls into some surf-pop 50's anthem drive in popcorn rock -- more Buddy Holly than Green Day. The final track "See The Light" is also largely forgettable and doesn't really sustain like "Whatsername" did on Idiot.
I'd give the album a 7. There's some killer stuff mixed in there, but there's also more than a little filler and even a few failed experiments that start off well (Viva La Gloria). Not bad at all, but not as good as they've done.
The majority of their songs sound the same to me :? Every time one starts I get confused as to which one it actualy is.
Silly, hypocritical, pseudo-anarchistic punk wannabes that preach the evils of corporations while reaping millions of dollars from the sales of their mediocre music.

Yeah, I suppose if there's one thing I could hold against Green Day, it's how commercial they've become while trying to maintain the punk veneer, which is absolutely anti-corporation and political establishment. They're getting a little preachy in their old age, but aren't we all I suppose?

The intros on the new album are probably their most diverse yet. Each track really stands out from the others.

I don't recall Green Day dumping toxic sludge into rivers or driving small buisnesses under. So they are successfull and have anarchistic lyrics and punk imagry so what?
I hate the whole OMG GREEN DAY ISN'T REALPUNK LOLZ! SELL OUTS! Its so silly.

Punk by proxy of what it is and has to say, should never become successful. That is -- if we're taking the message literally.

Thats lame. Punk doesn't have a single ideology I thought?
I think alot of the "hardcore" punk bands are just jealous rather than having real problems with Green Day. They would have done the same thing.
Since when does Punk and Luddite attitudes towards success and fame have anything to do with one another?
I hate everything about them. They are super anti-American, and they wear frickin eye liner. :x

I'm not denying that they hate everything, but you know Alice Cooper wears eye liner too :P
Anyway, Green Day is a pretty decent band.

Punk was started as an anomaly to the mainstream -- an angry riposte to the disco and Top 40 horse**** plugging the ear canals of people in the 60's and 70's. A punk band being Top 40 goes directly against what punk stood for, and why it came to be.
EDIT: I'm not saying I agree with that necessarily. Only that this is heart of the problem between punk purists and everyone else. I see valid points on both sides.
