Well, just like the topic says, guess which 5 states have the highest income. Don't worry about being right too much. Just go with your gut, post your guesses, and then look at the answers (for 2008 ). I'm not posting my answers because I already looked at the chart.

In no order I will guess Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts.

Edit: Damn, didn't even think of Hawaii or Alaska, but I am really surprised that NJ is at #2, and I was WAY off with Vermont.

I didn't try to guess the top 5 first, but I was right in thinking my state to be closer to the bottom.

Your guesses are a lot better than I think mine would have been. With all of the constant jokes in the media, I don't think many people are going to get #2 though. ;)

I think it is funny that New Jersey is always at the wrong end of state jokes, but they dominate on income.

I only got New Jersey and Connecticut correct, though. I thought California would be in the top five...how strange.

Median doesn't matter much...For instance if you have 3 people who make, $10,000, $50,000 and $1,000,000,000 the Median is $50,000 but it does not tell you jack crap about the rest.

Median does tell you something because it means half of the households are above that amount, and when you're talking about a large sample there is not likely going to be some kind of sudden steep drop-off right below the median. If some state has a median of $1,000 a year (which is higher than the median of some countries) then obviously there is something wrong there.

Anyway, I just made this thread because the list defied my expectations and states I would have thought would be at the top weren't. You're reading too much into it.

Its difficult with that because a lot of those people, especially the more higher earning people, of New Jersey work in New York. It would probably be different if the list was specific to earners within the state.

Doesn't matter much when consider how much things cost in those areas. In TN a huge house can be $300,00 while for $300,000 for a place in NY or out west will get you a 1 bedroom shack basically. I don't hold much stock in these things, states pay according to living expenses.

many of the southern states that have large republican bases are actually huge burdens on the national debt. due to their "Free market" ideas they need a lot of funding.

I'm glad for Colorado, we placed 13th :D On the other hand, Colorado has a lot of illegal immigrants, and I think if they were counted in this, Colorado would be significantly lower :(

Must be a nice trailer, cause you can get a 2 story, 4 bedroom for around 250k in Middle TN.

Median is by far the best statistical measure for this type of data. If you use the mean instead, your going to have billionaires throwing off the numbers by a lot.

Imagine that...5 of the ones with the highest cost of living...who would have thunk it  -numbers are just that...numbers...you can make them 'say' anything you want them to Making a $100,000 a year in New York may seem nice (when compared to making $50,000 in Lubbock, Texas)...but when you factor in cost of living, then that deal (New York) sucks A number that would be beneficial would be mean(average) income/average cost of living
