Who knows, the fans will be lucky if the film ever gets made, at this point. With MGM in dire financial straights, its future might be in question.
I'm hoping its because del Toro is moving ahead with his long-discussed adaptation of At the Mountains of MadnessxaosThat would be sooo awesome!
I'm no expert on stuff like this, but surely every movie company in the world would be bidding for the rights to the movie if MGM collapse, considering RotK's performance? Or am I misunderstanding the situation?Who knows, the fans will be lucky if the filmever getsmade, at this point. With MGM in dire financial straights, its future might be in question.

That is a shame. I am sure the movie will be awesome anyway.

Without a good director, this movie will be a mess.

But they haven't chosen a new director yet. :? "Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished" says Jackson. "New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work".[QUOTE="xaos"]I'm hoping its because del Toro is moving ahead with his long-discussed adaptation of At the Mountains of MadnessDEVILinIRONThat would be sooo awesome!

Or am I misunderstanding the situation? Right now, the film is supposed to be financed & produced by New Line/Warner Bros & MGM. A fair amount of MGM projects have been put on hold because of their financial troubles, including the latest James Bond film, which was put on hold "indefinitely". Maybe another studio might pick up the slack, but it's also a gamble as well. If someone ponys up the cash, and the movie fails, that's a LOT of money lost.[QUOTE="Pierst179"]

But if not, are they gonna find a director who has a passion for the project, or someone that's just going to go through the motions for the sake of just getting the movie made...and possibly make a mediocre movie as a result? This statement might make some people uneasy. I can't see Jackson allowing that.... The studio has more authority than Jackson.[QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"] This statement might make some people uneasy. If Jackson returns, great. Neill Blomkamp would be my choice under Peter Jackson as producer..District 9 being his first film he directed and wrote was amazing movie, extremely low budget..

MrGeezer
It doesn't matter who they replace him with, because this movie is NEVER getting made.
Yeah I can see this project being delayed for years. I thought they have been trying to make this since the 90's at least. Maybe we are better off with the 70's version.
With all the fall backs already this might takes years for it to be made, I was interested on what Del Toro was going to do with it, but it's more than unlikely that Peter Jackson will direct it, if it even gets made...Jazz_FanI am actually more interested in Guillermo del Toro's making something other than The Hobbit. Cronos, Hellboy 1 & 2, Devil's Backbone, and Pan's Labyrinth show that this man is one of most creative directors and screenwriters of modern times. :)
Dear MGM,
Please sell the rights of LOTR and Bond to a studio that knows what it's doing, then finally roll over and die. Nobody wants you around, and you're killing beloved franchises by clinging on.
Sincerely,
Everyone.
Seriosuly, New Line were the reason Jackson himself wasn't directing, they keeled over, now MGM have forced del Toro away with their delays, why can they not just make this movie?
