run a sanding belt at full speed and put your fingers on it for about 5 minutes each day. after a few weeks, your fingers will be caliced.

for me, a big thing was when I actually learned the scales, that definitely helps

The pentatonic blues scale in E is a good place to start:

E|--0--3---------------------------------------------

...oh, and learning tablature would help too...
