I am using Firefox version 3.0.8. When I search for things in Google and click on search result, I get redirect to other sites. Also I tried to open Malwarebytes but it won't open. I also tried to used System Restore but it won't work either. My computer also seems to run a tad slower.

I thought that thing was suppose to activate on April 1. On April 1st I used Symantec's removal tool and it found I had nothing.

I can go to Symantec's website but I cant go to Malwarebytes's website. I thought conficker was suppose to block both? I am gonna try to run symantec's removal tool again.

I'm not familiar with this virus but you might like to consider partitioning your hard drive so only windows sits on the first partition, then reformatting and re-installing is a less painful experience.

or get a mac /flameshield on

Don't reformat until you at least try to clear whatever is wrong yourself. Go here and try this

Follow instructions from this link -> http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13616

If problems persist, make a new topic here -> http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup

People there will help you out. I had problems after accepting a fake Java update notifier and no program at ALL performed acceptably (almost every action had lag, except for typing). They basically require you to dl Hijack This, perform a log report and post a log report on their cleanup forum so that some expert can diagnose your system.

I once got a nasty virus and went thru all the safe mode, hijack this, internet instructions to clean it, right down to manually editing the windows registry, it still kept appearing. I wasted a day doing this when reformatting would of only taken half a day. (which I had to do anyway)

Reformatting takes 10 mins for me, no point in doing the slow way, just do quick NTFS, and then it's just 20 mins to install Windows.

well I've never managed to install windows in 20mins but if it helps my argument..... ;) There's also programs to re-install, network settings, email accounts etc. A wise person would make a clone on another drive (which I do on my mac) saved my life being able to boot straight off an external drive and keep working like nothing ever happened to my internal drive. anyway, as they say in aliens, "nuke it from space, it's the only way to be sure" :)

THat's why I don't leave too many personal stats on my computer, so it's easier for me to format whenever I want. However If you're not sure why you can't open apps and your system is runnign slow with Firefox re-directing you. Reformat would be my option, then after you format, take better care of yoru computer this time.

You don't have Conficker. Conficker does not do this, people just assume that getting a virus as of a few weeks ago = Conficker. You just have some sort of browser hijacker, boot into safe mode and download some sort of anti-malware.

Gah! It annoys me to no end that people think they need to format their hard drives every time something goes awry. I've had a few viruses on my machine over the years, but I have always taken care of them myself, have never formatted, and as of last night's virus and spyware scans, not one file is infected. Besides, anybody who knows anything about computers will tell you that a format isn't guaranteed to get rid of malware anyway. games619, It sounds like you might be infected with Vundo, a.k.a. Virtumonde. Those are the same symptoms I had, and I found a few different solutions on Google. If you aren't getting a notification about an infection from your antivirus or antispyware program, you might try installing a new one and see if it picks it up. I recommend AVG and Ad-Aware. When you get the issue resolved, be sure to download the latest updates for any web-connected software, especially Java, Flash and Acrobat. It is very common for security flaws in these programs to be exploited to give malware a doorway onto your system. In the meanwhile, don't restart your system unless absolutely necessary. If you are infected, restarting might trigger the program to activate. Also, don't use System Restore, as many malicious programs infect System Restore points, and this could actually make matters worse. And really don't format your drive, that's just stupid.

No one said he needs to. It would just be the fastest and most effective method. Or you can go waste a half a day trying to get rid of it. Sometimes you can't get rid of them unless you plan on crippling your operating system. And yeah, reformatting does get rid of malware, 100%, as you practically wipe the whole HDD clean then follow to install a fresh copy of Windows. Anybody who knows anything about computers will tell you that. Plus, it's always a good idea to reformat and start fresh every few months or so.

That's how I got rid of Vundo. I updated AVG and Ad-Aware, restarted in Safe Mode with my network cable unplugged, performed full system scans and manually removed suspect files and registry entries, including the contents of my System Restore directory just to be safe. And I agree that it's not Conficker.

Actually, many people recommended formatting as the best option, which is why I wanted to make the point that I did. I just don't see how backing up all one's important files and reinstalling the OS along with every program, driver and patch is at all a practical solution. That would certainly take at least half a day. Furthermore, if all he's infected with is a low-grade trojan that a good antivirus program will take care of, wouldn't it be a pretty dumb move to go through all the trouble of formatting the hard drive? That's what I'm talking about: you don't have any idea what's wrong with his system, or that he's even infected with anything at all, and yet your first thought is to wipe everything out and start over. That's crazy. No, reformatting doesn't guarantee that malware will be removed. For one thing, malicious code can live in a hell of a lot more places on your system than just your hard drive. But even if the entire infection was contained within the hard drive, it could still very easily be restored after formatting. Data has to be overwritten a number of times before it is actually no longer readable, and simply formatting won't cut it. You're also not taking into consideration all the unnecessary strain that formatting puts on the drive, effectively shortening its lifespan. And by what logic do you suppose that a hard drive ought to be formatted every few months? Why should this be necessary?

boot your computer to safe mode, then do a spyware and virus scan, best to run them both twice, sometimes you find stuff on the 2nd scan, also defrag your hdd and run disk cleanup, you should be fine, if that doesnt get rid of your problem you may need to take out your hdd and connect it to another computer externally and do a virus scan.

Actually, many people recommended formatting as the best option, which is why I wanted to make the point that I did. (No argument there, but in this case, it may be the best option) I just don't see how backing up all one's important files and reinstalling the OS along with every program, driver and patch is at all a practical solution. (It wasn't my thought, mine would be to attempt to remove it, if it doesn't work, then do it. Also if it took you half a day, cool, but I usually get my drivers and programs installed within less than an hour No, reformatting doesn't guarantee that malware will be removed. If you follow this method there is a 99.9999% chance that it will eliminate any virus, malware, or the like. 1. Insert the Windows CD/DVD as your computer is booting up, and get into the set up. 2. Delete the Partition your current Windows XP is installed, this will clean off everything and leave your HDD in an un-formatted state. Alas there will be some files remaining, but all of them inactive, and most likely corrupted, which you will have to use special software to recover. I guarantee malware won't resurrect itself. 3. Format using NTFS Quick or the normal one, I always use NTFS quick, because really it never made a difference to use the slow one, and it avoids shortening the life span. 4. Install Windows, boot up, and voila, back to normal, minus all your stuff being gone. But you can always do a ghost image you know... :P And by what logic do you suppose that a hard drive ought to be formatted every few months? Why should this be necessary? It is not necessary, where did I say it was? However, it cleans off all the crap and clutter, and you get a clean fresh install of Windows.

if you ask me formatting your hdd is not fixing the problem, your just giving up and taking the easy way out, yea it will probably fix the problem but its much more time consuming.

JN-FENRIR, I actually had a free AOL Security System as my firewall, virus scanner, and spyware scanner. I only recently (few weeks ago) downloaded Malwarebytes. Now I am actually get popups from Internet Explorer, AND IM NOT USING IE!!!!!

Im gonna boot into safe mode and download AVG and Adware-whatever like you said. Then I may use HIJACK THIS like GAMESPOT4LIFE from the first page said.

Let's see what happens

If you have tried all other means and nothing is working then the last resort to get your pc back in working order again is to reformat your hard drive. But before you do that, you need to make sure you have all your personal files backed up on either an external hard drive, USB pen, DVD/CD etc. Next make sure you have your windows disc other wise you cant reinstall windows. And finally make sure you are 100% you want to reformat. Getting data back from a reformat can be tricky and expensive.

Just cant off your personal stuff. Reformat your drive. Reinstall windows, then just all your files back.
