Quick question ya'll. When you were growing up, how involved was your dad in your life? Did he do the TV dad stuff, like play catch, show you how to shave, etc., or were you left to fend for yourself? Just curious :)

My dad worked 4 hours away from home, for 8 hour shifts, i would only see him a couple of hours a week, but it was necessary, he took up a major role in the family after mine and my sisters mother passed away though so props on that.
I had the dad who wished I was more like him (As in being more interested in boating and camping and ****).Nerd_ManPretty much this... I mean, he still loved me and everything, but we never saw eye to eye on anything at all.
No. Never did any activities with him. Unless you count watching TV... He worked somewhat far from home. He would leave about 5:30 A.M and get back late. When he came home he just wanted to...er..."chill." Never did the playing catch/building stuff. To be honest I barely even talked to him growing up. :?
My dad has been moderatly active in my life. When I was younger he signed me up for baseball and practiced with me. He also played baseball and hockey with a few of my friends and me when I was younger. I only see him a month or two out the year now because he's up digging oil for 140k a year supporting the family but I'd say hes probably a pretty average father.
I guess I can share my experiences. My dad wasn't around much. Between his day job, which every now and then would require him to leave for weeks at a time to work on aircrafts, and his farming in the evenings, I didn't really see him much. Not to mention my mother was quite the softie, so she'd leave him with all the iron-fist of the family duties :P. Needless to say between his absence and his presence often accompanied by corporal punishment, he wasn't my favorite person. I pretty well taught myself everything I know, including music, since that was the way he did it.
Now that I'm older, our relationship has only gotten weirder. He's gotten to the point where he knows I'm not around as much so he really wants to make up for lost time, but he's also going through a mid-life crisis, so most of his ideas of father-son bonding days revolve around gentlemen's clubs. I find it very strange going with my pops.
He was pretty much absent for the duration of my childhood but he tried to make up for it in his later years by actually taking vacation days and taking us to trips and such.
My dad kicks ass. One of the funniest guys I know and we've done lots together. We played sunday night hockey together, went dirtbikin' (mind you the whole family did) went boating (water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, fishing), played catch with a football...tons of crap like that. We came close to going to AC/DC together.
My dad and I played catch quite a bit when I was younger, and we've done stuff like golfing and all together, but generally, we spend time together by remodeling the house.

Did you grow up without a father figure then, or?
I am guessing that is it, same for me. Same for me, but luckily I have 3 brothers so we would just beat each other up occasionally and that worked out pretty well. We learned enough that way so we didn't need a father figure. Having a great mother didn't hurt either. We're all mostly well adjusted people :)my dad didnt live with us, though I did go to see him every 2 weeks, when I did visit him , all I got were insults telling me how worthless I am.
He played baseball with me...and we still watch some movies together...
Been driving me crazy lately...no matter how good i do nothing is ever good enough for him...
i'm lucky enough to have a great dad (and mom for that matter), sure he had a terrible temper (which was passed on to me unfortunately) but he raised me good. he was a musician (percussionist) and i watched his band play all growing up. he's the reason why i have such a passion for music and i hope to pass that on to my daughter.
Yeah I had a TV dad, as in that's what you'd find him sitting in front of if he wasn't at work or asleep. :x
